HOUSTON — Legislation signed into law by Gov. Rick Perry gives school bus drivers the authority to address discipline issues on their buses by sending students to the principal’s office.

Senate Bill 1541, which is effective immediately, amends the law to state that bus drivers may send a student to the principal’s office to maintain discipline on the school bus when transporting students to and from school or a school-related activity.

The principal must respond by employing appropriate discipline management techniques consistent with the district’s student code of conduct. Also, the district’s student code of conduct must specify the circumstances under which a student can be removed from a bus.

Keye TV reports that school bus drivers from across the state had lobbied for the bill last month.
