MONTICELLO, N.Y. — After serving as assistant director of transportation at Monticello Central School District for the past year, Helen Herbert has been promoted to the director role.

With a new school year beginning soon, Herbert said that she feels ready to take on the challenges of heading the transportation department.

“During this past year in Monticello, I have learned many things, but the single most important thing I have discovered is what a great transportation team we have in the school district,” she said. “The staff is wonderful, and I look forward to working with them and [the] administration to help change the face of our transportation department in the years to come.”

Herbert came to Monticello Central School District in 2014 from First Student, where she served as Hudson Valley safety manager for 11 years. In that position, she was responsible for all aspects of safety for 15 locations.

Prior to her First Student position, Herbert worked for Wallkill Valley School Bus Services from 1989 to 2003. There, she served in various positions, including bus driver, 19A certified examiner, driver instructor, attendant instructor, dispatcher and safety coordinator.

Herbert is a member of the New York Association for Pupil Transportation. She also served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1983 to ’88 as a yeoman third class petty officer.

“Helen is a wonderful addition to the Monticello family,” Superintendent Tammy Mangus said. “She brings extensive experience and a true sense of caring to the department and the district as a whole, and I congratulate her on earning this new position.”
