The average price of on-highway diesel in the nation has dipped under $4 per gallon for the first time since January, according to new federal data.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s latest weekly report on diesel prices found the national average at $3.993 per gallon as of April 1. That's 15 cents lower than it was last year at this time.

The average diesel price in the U.S. began rising steadily in mid-January, when it was $3.894 per gallon. The national average peaked at $4.159 on Feb. 25 and has been on the decline since then.

Still, the average diesel price in some regions of the U.S. remains well above $4 per gallon. In New England, it was $4.148 as of April 1; in California, it was $4.200.
