Bus driver uses training to save man’s life

BUFFALO VALLEY, Tenn. — A school bus driver used her training to save the life of a man who began bleeding excessively due to a complication related to a recent surgery.

Tammy League, who has driven a bus for 27 years, heard her mother screaming for help at Hurricane Hollow Apple Orchard, which she helps run, the Herald-Citizen reports. League told the newspaper that when she came around to see what was happening, she saw "what looked like a creek of blood flowing."

Eddie Thompson had had surgery a few weeks prior, and one of the incision points began to bleed unexpectedly when he came to pick up a batch of apples at the orchard. Thompson's wife called 911 while League retrieved safety gloves and a first aid kit from her bus.

League applied pressure on the wound for 20 minutes until the ambulance arrived, the Herald-Citizen reports. Doctors later told Thompson that if League had not been there to stop the bleeding, he would have bled to death. Also, if she had applied any more or less pressure than she did in any spot even inches away from the incision, he could have lost his leg.
