TAKOMA PARK, Md. — A Love the Bus celebration that will be held here later this month will have at least one very high-profile attendee: U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Alex Robinson, who is president-elect of the National Association for Pupil Transportation and is coordinating Love the Bus events this year for the American School Bus Council (ASBC), said that LaHood is confirmed to attend. The celebration was originally slated for Feb. 14 (Valentine’s Day) but was moved to Feb. 22 to accommodate LaHood’s schedule.

The event will be held at Takoma Park Elementary School. It will involve a yellow school bus, the students and driver of that bus, and officials from the school and its district, Montgomery County Public Schools.

Robinson said that students will give handmade valentines to their driver and place magnetic lips on the bus, and ASBC T-shirts will be given out to the adults if possible.

In addition to LaHood, officials from the U.S. Department of Education and the EPA have been invited, as have members of the media.

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the elementary school, which is at 7511 Holly Ave. in Takoma Park.
