AJO, Ariz. — Beginning this school year, Ajo Unified School District will require students to carry certificates proving their residency in order to board school buses.
Up to now, some students living in Mexico would cross the border and board a bus at Lukeville to make the 38-mile trip to school, The Arizona Republic reports.
The move follows state Department of Education investigations sparked by complaints. The school district is working to determine residency for the students. So far, 48 certificates have been issued, officials said.
Illegal immigrants can attend Arizona schools if they are residents of the state.
