LOS ANGELES — Last week, Los Angeles Unified School District floated a plan to ask parents of high school students to donate $24 per student to fund trips to high school sporting events.
According to the Daily Breeze, $650,000 was cut from the district's athletics transportation budget and if additional funds could not be raised, games could be canceled.
However, on Friday, the Breeze's breaking news blog reported that Superintendent Ramon Cortines had rescinded the request for donations, saying he would find another source for funding.
"After further review of the voluntary $24 per student transportation donation for high school sporting events this year, I have ordered this decision for a request for this voluntary fee be rescinded and have asked staff to go back and review other alternatives," Cortines told reporter Melissa Palmer.
