If you could travel anywhere …
Latin America. I spent many months traveling and working in South and Central America during my career and enjoyed the friendships, cultures and experiences I made along the way.

One story that sticks with me is our dealing with a bus cooperative in Colombia. I visited a customer who operated hundreds of buses in the central part of Colombia.

On visiting his dispatch office, he showed me a map of the country with approximately 100 pins on the map. The customer was located in the center of the recruiting effort for the FARC [Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia], a “narco-terrorist” organization that has been wreaking havoc in Colombia for years. In order to intimidate the population and extort money, they would hijack the inter-city buses, rob the passengers and then “torch” the bus. The purpose of my visit was to sell the co-op new buses. Although the opportunity was financially rewarding for our company, it was a firsthand look at how terrorism affects a population. My heart went out to the bus operators and their customers who relied on this essential service for transportation and their livelihoods. They are resilient, remarkable people who were living through a very dangerous period.

I miss these adventures and hope to recreate similar adventures in the future.

Something people would be surprised to learn about you?
I have visited numerous bus manufacturing plants throughout the world and talked to bus executives about the dynamics, issues and challenges of our business. I discovered that there is a common bond and understanding among all “bus people” that you can only appreciate if you are part of the bus industry.

What do you like most about being in the industry?
Meeting interesting and unique people who have impacted my life.

The last thing you do before you leave the office at the end of the day?
Head for the next adventure.

Brandon Billingsley
President, Heavy Duty Bus Parts Inc., Willis, Texas

[IMAGE]597[/IMAGE]

How did you get your start in the industry?
My grandfather designed and implemented the first universal axle bend exhaust system for school buses in 1968. From there he formed his company, Billingsley Parts and Equipment Inc. For summer jobs I did just about everything at Billingsley Parts, from seat covers to welding to shipping and receiving. I guess I was born into it, and proudly so.

Current job duties?
Overseeing the daily operations of our current product line, as well as the research and development of new products.

Top achievements?
Graduating college from Southwest Texas State University and being named an honoree by the Texas Association for Pupil Transportation. Of course, I’m very proud of my wife and two children.

Outside interests?
The outdoors. Offshore fishing is a huge passion; however, I’ll take any fishing. Scuba diving and the places it has taken me is also a big enjoyment.

Tell us about some of your most memorable trips.
Climbing the mountains of Central Mexico to see the pyramids and taking a bus ride from there to Acapulco to go out after sailfish. The bus ride was an adventure in itself and we did manage to land a 9-foot sail. Some of my favorite dive spots are off the island of Cozumel. Horseback riding the mountains of Colorado with my father, or fishing a stock pond with my son — they’re all special.

If you could travel anywhere …
Africa, to experience the Serengeti. Also, there’s some of the world’s best marlin fishing off the coast of East Africa.

What do you like most about being in the industry?
The people. The many friends, role models and mentors that I’ve developed within the industry.

The last thing you do before you leave the office at the end of the day?
Turn off the A/C, turn off the lights and lock the door.

[IMAGE]599[/IMAGE]

How did you get your start in the industry?
I started as an account representative for REI selling audio systems and camera systems to school bus manufacturers, dealers, distributors and contractors.

Current job duties?
I help manage the company, manage our marketing activities, manage our sales to school bus manufacturers, assist our sales department, act as a liaison between our sales, engineering, manufacturing, purchasing and various other departments as well as coordinate our ISO 9001:2008 Quality System as our management representative.

Top achievements?
I am proud to personally provide top quality products and outstanding customer service to folks in the school bus industry. I’m lucky to have married my best friend, my wife Terri, 25 years ago and we are raising three fantastic young men. It took me six years to graduate from college while working full time and raising a family, but it was well worth the effort.

Outside interests?
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, participating in and watching sports, especially baseball, listening to music, attending concerts, and traveling to fun and interesting places.

If you could travel anywhere …
I would take my family to Australia and New Zealand. My father-in-law talked of taking the family someday. Unfortunately, he passed away before he could make his dream trip come true. I hope I can make it happen for my family soon.

Something people would be surprised to learn about you?
I was a little shy in high school, but I overcame it a bit since and enjoy making a fool of myself singing karaoke.

What do you like most about being in the industry?
It is a relatively small industry with many dedicated, passionate people. Once you get a taste of school bus yellow it sticks with you. I have developed many fantastic friendships over the years.

The last thing you do before you leave the office at the end of the day?
Organize my work calendar for the next day and review my personal calendar for the evening’s events.

Notable previous jobs: I’ve only had one job since college: sales and marketing with REI.

Rick Lehnert
President, Trans/Air Mfg., Dallastown, Pa.

[IMAGE]600[/IMAGE]

How did you get your start in the industry?
My family has worked in the transportation industry since 1850 as a manufacturer and distributor. In 1979, we started Trans/Air to manufacture truck refrigeration and bus air conditioning.

Current job duties?
I’m responsible for orchestrating the activities of the company’s management team to accomplish our strategic objectives.

Top achievements?
My involvement in the industry associations: the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (supplier council), the American School Bus Council and the National School Transportation Association. Also, working with my competitors to propose changes to the national school bus guidelines for air conditioning.

If you could travel anywhere in the world …
I would travel to South Dakota, the only state in the U.S. that I have not visited. I believe in traveling in the U.S. There’s so much to see and everyone is so hospitable. I have never been to a place where I didn’t have a good time and get to meet nice people.

What do you like most about being in the industry?
I love being involved in an industry that is totally focused on the safe transport of kids to school and providing that transportation so that anyone who wants an education has access to one. I believe that bus transportation is a key part of the educational process. There is no learning if the kids can’t get to school and home. School buses are a good equalizer and they are beneficial for the environment, too, taking an average of 36 cars off the road.

The last thing you do before you leave the office at the end of the day?
Unfortunately, when you own a business you never really leave the office behind. You are always thinking about it and what needs to be done. In the back of your mind you continue to work on issues and opportunities until you return.

Born: Baltimore
Home: Parkton, Md.
Years in industry: 31

Notable previous jobs: I started in the shop installing and servicing bus air conditioning, and then worked in a variety of positions as I moved my way up in Trans/Air to my current position as owner and president.

Robert Knapp

Executive Vice President/Stockholder, The C.E. White Co., New Washington, Ohio

[IMAGE]601[/IMAGE]

How did you get your start in the industry?
For many of my new van conversions, I used C.E. White seats. I was so impressed by the quality and service that I received from them that when Bill Frazee offered me the opportunity to buy into the company with him, I took it and moved to Ohio.

Current job duties?
I am involved in sales, engineering and new product development.

Top achievements?
I believe my best contribution to the school bus industry was made back in 1994. I saw that Chrysler had added a rear seat in their minivan with an integrated child restraint insert in the seat that folded out into a five-point harness for children under 5 years old. I came to an agreement with Chrysler to allow The C.E. White Co. to use their insert in our school bus seats and thus came out with the first fully integrated child restraint seat for school buses.

Outside interests?
Although I still enjoy building or restoring custom cars, my wife Teri and I spend as much time as possible in the Caribbean, where we love to go deep sea fishing with our children and grandchildren. One island comes right to mind when I think of the Caribbean. It is the island of Anguilla located just northwest of St. Martin. My wife and I were invited to this island last year by two of our close friends. We were there during the local festival, where each of the small villages on the island, over the last year, had built their own sailing boat and then during the festival raced them around the island. We were also able to spend one afternoon on the beach at the Dune Preserve Bar.

Something people would be surprised to learn about you?
I have only one personal lifetime goal, known only by my closest friends, and I work on that goal every opportunity I can.

What do you like most about being in the industry?
What I admire most about the school bus industry is that it is the only industry that has fully dedicated itself to transporting our children and grandchildren as safely as possible back and forth to school every day of the school year.

Born: South Haven, Mich.
Home: Fort Myers, Fla.
Years in industry: 20
Notable previous jobs: Owned a custom car and van company.

Cheyne Rauber
General Manager, Rifled Air Conditioning, High Point, N.C.

[IMAGE]602[/IMAGE]

How did you get your start in the industry?
As a student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, I worked part time for Matthews Distributor Services as an aftermarket bus air conditioning installer and actually assisted in the assembly of some of Rifled Air Conditioning’s first productions of air conditioning units. Five years later, in September 2000, I was hired as the sales manager for Rifled.

Current job duties?
I’m responsible for the effective management of all day-to-day activities at Rifled Air Conditioning, including sales and marketing, operations, personnel management and directing the company to profitability.

Top achievements?
Professionally: successfully merging two companies into a complete turnkey air conditioning manufacturing and installation facility to take control of the air conditioning system from start to finish, and redirecting the company’s vision into being a leader in the school bus air conditioning market.

Personally: being a father to three great boys!

Outside interests?

Something people would be surprised to learn about you?
That I love to cook!

What do you like most about being in the industry?
The people. When I first started working for Rifled Air Conditioning, Glenn Matthews took me to a trade show and as we walked the floor, he told me, “People are the key to this industry! Now get out there and meet them, build relationships with them and enjoy your time with them!”

The last thing you do before you leave the office at the end of the day?

Kent Tyler
President, Collins Bus Corp., Hutchinson, Kan.

[IMAGE]603[/IMAGE]

Current job duties?
Leading the largest manufacturer of small school buses in North America, representing the Collins, Mid Bus and Corbeil brands through a family of over 50 distributors.

Top achievements?
Without question, it would be my involvement with our company over the last four years, a period that has seen transformational change in how we manufacture Type A buses. We’ve consolidated and grown by utilizing principles of Lean manufacturing to involve employees, reduce waste, communicate better and improve all processes. In our attempts to just get better, we’ve seen the “can-do” attitude of our employees lead to major improvements across the whole organization. The team really believes that we are only as good as the last bus to leave the plant.

Notable previous jobs?
In college, I took a semester off to run state legislative races for the Oklahoma Republican Party. It was a great experience that taught me a lot about how to deal with people.

Outside interests?
I enjoy golf, Oklahoma State University sports and spending time with my family.

Something people would be surprised to learn about you?
I’m a proud member of the board of directors of the Kansas Cosmosphere & Space Center, located in Hutchinson. One of the first-ever Smithsonian affiliate museums, they have an incredible space artifact collection that includes the largest collection of Russian space artifacts outside of Moscow. On display are the actual flown spacecraft from all three of the first U.S. manned space programs, including the Apollo 13 command module. Truly an incredible museum!

What do you like most about being in the industry?
Beyond our yellow bus business, I’m passionate about our efforts to rid our communities of nonconforming vans or passenger vehicles used by churches, day care centers and others to transport students. There’s no doubt about it — the certified school bus offers the most economical and safest method of transportation on the road today, and we want to do our part to help these organizations replace their vans with certified small buses.

The last thing you do before you leave the office at the end of the day?
On my way out the door, I often pause for a look at “Old #1,” the first Type A school bus we produced, which is on display in our lobby. She serves as a reminder of our history — 43 years of commitment to our community and the school bus industry.

Current job duties?
I’m responsible for all sales and marketing functions at 247Security. I’m also involved in business and partnership development.

Top achievements?
Professionally, I have enjoyed hiring young talent and watching them grow. There are a number of people scattered about the school bus industry and beyond who started with me. My time with Dufferin-Peel was also special. The district was growing at a rapid pace, and we built a very competent team. On the personal side, being a father is without a doubt the highlight of my life. I cannot imagine anything more gratifying than watching my three children grow.

[IMAGE]606[/IMAGE]

How did you get your start in the industry?
BESI is a family-owned and operated business that my father started in our garage. I have been in the school bus industry steadily now for 22 years, but you could say I started 35 years ago spending some long summers answering phones. Vacations were generally state trade shows.

Current job duties?
I am still handling a lot of day-to-day duties: accounts payable, receivables and payroll. I am transitioning from working in the business to working on the business.

Top achievements?
Being able to work in a family business and having a good family  relationship in and outside of work. On the personal side, I am proud of my marriage of 26 years and our two wonderful daughters. Also, I went back to school while raising a family.

Something people would be surprised to learn about you?
In my youth I played on a select soccer team, and as an adult I have coached recreational and select girls soccer.

What do you like most about being in the industry?
I would have to say the people. People in the school bus industry are a kind of extended family. Everyone is striving to provide a safer and better means for our children.

The last thing you do before you leave the office at the end of the day?
Besides a last check of e-mails and phone messages, I lock the door as I leave.

Mike McQuade
Chief Technology Officer, Zonar Systems, Seattle

[IMAGE]609[/IMAGE]

How did you get your start in the industry?
I became involved through Zonar back in 2001 when we set out to fulfill the growing and expanding technological demands of the transportation industry.
