The company will provide pupil transportation services for operations in Southern California, New Jersey, Rhode Island and northern Ontario in Canada beginning in the upcoming school year. Officials say the contracts will add about 250 vehicles to the company’s fleet and $13 million of annualized revenues.

At the National School Transportation Association’s Capitol Hill Fly-In, members meet with representatives to push for continued protections for school bus operators, including the federal fuel tax exemption and the ban on transit encroachment. A team of bus drivers from First Student's school bus yard in San Francisco will participate in AIDS/LifeCycle 10, a seven-day bike ride to raise AIDS awareness. The drivers commit to getting fit, training and raising $3,000 each.
Former owner, president of Virginia bus company passes away

Mark D. Fisher started Virginia Overland Transportation with his parents in 1973 as a school bus consulting service. The company grew to provide many types of contracted transportation and also operated bus dealerships. Fisher passed away on April 30 at age 59.

Under a five-year agreement, the company will provide student transportation to the Capitol Region Education Council in Hartford, Conn., as needed during the summer before providing transportation for 360 routes at the start of the 2011-12 school year.

The contractor provides shuttles for the filming of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. One shuttle was used for the volunteers helping to build the home. The other shuttle was used for spectators.

First Student wins Louisiana contract

Under the five-year agreement, the contractor will provide school bus service for the St. James Parish School Board beginning in April. The company will also provide all routing, maintenance and management services, and hire drivers for routes currently without a district driver.

Delaney Bus Lines employees wear pink T-shirts on Feb. 23 in observance of Pink Shirt Day. The Canadian event originated from an incident several years ago when two students organized a protest to show support for a boy who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school.

Steven Sauer drives into a snow bank while on route to pick up elementary school students and is then arrested. In addition to firing Sauer, the company that employed him is considering installing Breathalyzers on its buses to help prevent similar incidents.
