Bus company requests dismissal of lawsuit from former driver

The contractor is being sued by Ken Webber, who was fired for refusing to take a Confederate flag with the word "redneck" on it off of his pickup truck, which was parked in a lot owned by a school district that the contractor serves. The company says that Webber considered the flag to be an expression of his identity and lifestyle, and that therefore, his flag is not constitutionally protected speech because its message is not a matter of public concern.
Student Transportation adds 700 vehicles in Wis. acquisition

Atlantic Express expands use of GreenRoad technology

The school bus contractor is now using the company’s driving performance and safety management system in more than 2,300 buses serving the greater New York City metro area. Noel Cabrera, executive vice president of Atlantic Express, says that the company chose GreenRoad’s system because it provides an in-bus “coach” that is with each driver every day and on every mile.
NSTA, Zonar sponsor $50K fleet equipment grant

The grant will provide one bus company that serves a school system with the following technology from Zonar: Electronic Vehicle Inspection Report, GPS, real-time engine diagnostic reporting and Ground Traffic Control web-based software. Applicants must be current NSTA members, and applications are due Dec. 29.
Landmark acquires 2 bus operators in Ontario

Both Northway Bus Lines and Alouette Bus Lines were owned by Daniel Joanis, an industry veteran and former director of the Ontario School Bus Association. The companies' 200 employees will stay on under the new ownership, Landmark Student Transportation said.
Student Transportation acquires N.J. bus company

The contractor completes its acquisition of School Transportation Services, which is based in Passaic County. Officials say the deal will add over 90 vehicles to the company’s fleet and annualized revenues of just over $5.4 million.

National Express Group to acquire Petermann

The parent company of Durham School Services and Stock Transportation has signed an agreement to acquire Petermann, which is headquartered in Cincinnati and has operations across 10 states in the West, Midwest and Southwest. Officials say the acquisition will increase National Express’ fleet size to 20,000 buses and introduce the company to new states.
Survey: 54% of Mich. districts now contract out services

The Mackinac Center for Public Policy finds that for the first time, more than half of Michigan school districts now use private vendors to provide food, custodial or transportation services. Statewide, transportation contracting grew the fastest, rising 27 percent from last year.
Stock Transportation raises money to fight hunger in Somalia

The school bus contractor raises $3,000 to aid those affected by drought and famine in Somalia. The fundraiser is ongoing, and the Canadian government will match what the company raises. All funds will go to the Canadian Red Cross to be distributed in Somalia.

Illinois Central School Bus Co.’s service to five school districts in Winnebago County, Ill., has gone smoothly this school year, with buses on time and routes followed correctly. MV Transportation purchases N.Y. school bus operator

The company buys USA United Fleet Inc., and MV’s student transportation subsidiary, Reliant Transportation Inc., assumes the existing bus fleet and four New York City Department of Education operation and maintenance contracts. The company will begin operation of more than 500 bus routes with about 600 vehicles at the start of school in New York City on Sept. 8.
First Student signs 3-year contract with Mich. district

The contractor will serve Port Huron Area Schools under the contract, which is set to begin with the 2011-12 school year. First Student is currently interviewing district drivers and local residents to join its transportation staff in Port Huron, as well as adding additional safety features to each of the buses.
