MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. — Powertrain Integration Acquisition (PI) has finalized an agreement with New Eagle to provide an electronic service tool for its various engine offerings.

Dubbed “PI-DOC,” the PC-based tool will plug into a vehicle data link connector to access on-board diagnostic information to perform engine diagnosis, repair and reprogramming.

The PI-New Eagle relationship began in 2011 when the two companies partnered during PI’s development of its 8.0L PIthon propane autogas engine for the medium-duty on-highway and school bus markets. New Eagle provided the control system that PI used to engineer and calibrate the PIthon engine, which entered production last year in Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. S2G trucks and Thomas Built Saf-T-Liner C2 school buses.

Officials said that New Eagle is in the final phases of extensive testing to ensure that the PI-DOC tool can take full advantage of the latest controls that the company designed into the PIthon engine.

PI-DOC is a software program that is loaded on an end user’s PC. Utilizing RP1210 cables to connect to a vehicle diagnostic port, PI-DOC enables technicians to interact with the engine control module to display basic vehicle data and retrieve various sensor inputs.

PI-DOC reads diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) which point to causes of vehicle concerns and their remedies, and it also clears DTCs. When necessary, PI-DOC may also be used to reflash engine controllers.

In addition to creating a portal between the shop technician and the vehicle, company officials said that PI-DOC opens an enhanced line of communication between techs in the field and Powertrain Integration PI-POWER service support staff. Service providers can employ the record function of PI-DOC to capture raw vehicle data, which can be submitted to PI for analysis.

PI-DOC has not yet been released. It will be made available only to Powertrain Integration authorized service providers. For more information, contact Bob Roehl at (248) 298-3110 or email service@powertrainintegration.com.
