C.E. White names operations manager for Georgia warehouse

John Purvis has more than 30 years of plant and operations experience, having worked at such manufacturers as Blue Bird Corp. and North American Bus Industries. He will oversee the Fort Valley facility and its operations, as well as implement quality programs.
Thirty school bus maintenance professionals from 19 states participated in the America’s Best technician and inspector competitions in Jasper, Ind., last week.

Tim Knoll of Ohio placed first in the technician category and Shaun Dennis from Michigan took the top spot in the inspector category. Knoll and Dennis were among 30 school bus maintenance professionals who participated in the event; they were scored on a written exam and multiple hands-on components.

Father arrested after boarding bus, making threats

Surveillance video taken from the bus reportedly shows 17-year-old Sanguain Watson taking off his backpack and hitting special-needs student Brandon Taylor three times. Watson is facing charges for the incident; Taylor’s mother now transports her son to and from school.
Driver, monitor suspended after boy falls from wheelchair lift

The driver and monitor were distracted by another child running from the bus as the monitor was wheeling the boy onto the lift. The wheelchair tipped over as it hit the lift, causing the boy to fall 2-and-a-half feet. His injuries included cuts on his lip and cheek.

Police investigating suspicious object placed underneath school bus

The Gwinnett County (Ga.) Police Department received a call from a passerby reporting that she observed a female exit her vehicle and place an object underneath a school bus as it was stopped for traffic at an intersection. Police, FBI and fire officials are investigating the incident.

Police pulled over Timothy Radliff last week after a motorist reported that he was driving his bus erratically while four children were on board. Authorities say that Radliff told them he had taken prescription painkillers, but the man’s attorney said he does not believe that he was under the influence while on the job.
Transportation secretary: Distracted driving study is ‘misleading’

U.S. DOT chief Ray LaHood is referring to a report released on Tuesday by the Highway Loss Data Institute that questions the effectiveness of anti-texting while driving laws to improve traffic safety. LaHood said that the report fails to reconcile with previous research supported by the institute that shows that drivers are four times as likely to crash if using a hand-held device while driving.
