Special-needs event to offer NAPT endorsement courses

Attendees of the 2011 National Conference on Transporting Students With Disabilities and Preschoolers will be able to accumulate credits that count toward NAPT's new special-needs endorsement and its 32-hour course requirement for the NAPT Certificate of Special-Needs Transportation Training.

Indiana districts drop bus rider fees

Franklin Township Community School Corp. forgoes plans to charge a $75 fee following Attorney General Gregory Zoeller’s legal opinion that such fees are unconstitutional. The district’s board disagrees, but feels that being sued over the fee could be costly. Lake Central School Corp. drops its $10 fee out of respect for Zoeller’s opinion.

The Stop Watch program is set to launch this fall in St. Lucie County. Trained volunteers will monitor school bus stops in the area for suspicious activity. They will be given special cell phones that can contact 911 in the event of an incident.

Williams cites the environmental and economic benefits of utilizing the alternative fuel.
Bus driver helps save student’s life

Cristina Rickert stopped her bus when she saw students playing recklessly on a snow bank on the side of the road. One of the students then slid under the wheels of the bus. Rickert receives the 2010 New York State Bus Driver Heroism Award for her actions.

California pupil transportation operations may get more time to comply with the requirements of the Air Resources Board’s Truck and Bus Regulation, which was drafted to reduce emissions generated by diesel-powered buses, like these operated by Kings Canyon Unified School District. The agency has proposed changes to the regulation’s school bus provisions.
