Durham wins four new contracts

District to offer transportation services to K-8 students

Under a five-year agreement with Pennsylvania Coach Lines, approximately 427 Duquesne City School District students will be transported to the Duquesne Education Center, private and charter schools, and out-of-district programs. This is the first time in the district’s history that students who live more than a half-mile away from the education center will receive transportation.

Illinois school district’s superintendent gives rationale for privatizing transportation service in an eight-page memo to the school board, which votes its approval. The move comes after a March incident in which police said a school bus driver was nearly three times the legal alcohol limit.

Bill would require lap-shoulder belts on school buses

Massachusetts legislation awaits recommendation to go before the House for a vote. The senator who filed the bill says it aims to make outfitting buses with seat belts economical by requiring discounts on insurance premiums for school buses when belts are installed.

Indiana districts drop bus rider fees

Franklin Township Community School Corp. forgoes plans to charge a $75 fee following Attorney General Gregory Zoeller’s legal opinion that such fees are unconstitutional. The district’s board disagrees, but feels that being sued over the fee could be costly. Lake Central School Corp. drops its $10 fee out of respect for Zoeller’s opinion.

Program aims to protect children at bus stops

Under “Stop Watch,” set to launch this fall, trained volunteers will look for suspicious activity at school bus stops in a Florida community. The volunteers will be provided with a cell phone that can contact 911 when they see questionable activity.
