Police respond to a call in which two batteries from each of 10 Portsmouth (Va.) Public Schools buses were pulled and cut from the cables. The suspect in the incident has been charged with grand larceny, larceny with the intent to sell and destruction of property over $1,000.
Lawmakers push new illegal bus passing bill

The legislation would allow local jurisdictions to monitor and ticket drivers who illegally pass school buses using video cameras mounted on the buses. School bus drivers would be responsible for reporting incidents and handing over video footage to law enforcement personnel to review and issue the tickets.
New Jersey districts to share transportation services

Officials from Branchburg Township School District and Readington Township Public Schools expect each of the districts to save at least $70,000 under the first year of the agreement. Branchburg will provide the transportation supervisor, and Readington will provide the dispatcher. Maintenance of the buses will be shared.

Gov. Chris Gregoire wants to remove funding for the state’s five regional transportation coordinators and use the state’s Transportation Vehicle Fund to support a new funding formula. After a missing "at" in Virginia's law on school bus stop-arm running allowed a motorist to avoid conviction, legislation was introduced to clarify the wording. It was signed by the governor last week and went into effect immediately.

Operation earns 15th Excellent Fleet Award

North Kansas City Schools' transportation department earns the award from the Missouri Highway Patrol for the 15th consecutive year after receiving a fleet inspection rating of 99.4 percent. The transportation director says that of the more than 100 items inspected on each of the district's buses, only one "slightly loose item" prevented the district from earning a perfect score of 100.

George Gregory Gonsalves and Emel Enrique Marin each had a valid commercial driver's license in one name and a suspended license in another. They have been charged with offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree and falsifying business records in the second degree.

NAPT president completes special-needs training program

Dr. Linda Bluth is the fourth person in the U.S. to successfully complete the NAPT Special Needs Transportation Training Program. The program consists of 24 hours of education in a variety of different settings. The core curriculum is supplemented by eight hours of elective instruction from the NAPT Professional Development Series Program.

When a car collides with Leonard Davis' school bus, pushing it off the icy road and down an embankment, he manages to get the bus back on all four tires and onto the road. The veteran bus driver is credited with keeping more than 50 students and staff members safe.

The school bus manufacturer has zero-waste-to-landfill operations, meaning that everything received or produced by Thomas Built is used, reused, recycled or sold, and nothing is sent to a landfill. The company is also participating in a solar panel project, and all of its manufacturing facilities became ISO 14001 certified last year.

Next Wednesday, officers around New York State will ride in school buses and in marked and unmarked patrol units on selected bus routes that have a history of illegal bus passing complaints and issue tickets to violators. Final figures will be made available to state and local officials, as well as the media.
