Ontario police observe School Bus Safety Month

The Greater Sudbury Police Service Traffic Management Unit cracked down on motorists who committed safety-related infractions in September, with the efforts focused in school zones. Among the offenses were 105 speeding violations, 15 hand-held device offenses for cell phone use and reports of illegal bus passing.
Car renovator to restore rare vintage school bus

Rich Willard, owner of Vintage Motorcars, a restoration business, is restoring a circa 1948 Nash school bus for a Paris-based collector of Nash vehicles. The project, Willard’s first bus restoration, likely will take more than 3,000 man hours to complete and will cost in the $150,000 range.
Thomas Built dealer BusWest expands into Nevada

BusWest acquires the Nevada Thomas Built Buses dealership from Arizona-based Auto Safety House. BusWest, which has sales and service locations in California and Hawaii, will now also serve Nevada through an office in North Las Vegas.

Utah’s Murrell Martin named NCST chair

The state director will officially assume the role at the conclusion of the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services conference in Grand Rapids, Mich., later this week, and in the role, he will preside over the 16th National Congress on School Transportation in 2015. Martin replaces West Virginia state director Ben Shew, who is retiring at the end of this month.

In the new DVD from Indiana school bus driver Greg Beaverson, he conducts a pre-trip inspection, beginning with the outside of the bus and then moving to the inside. The process is broken down into several chapters that can be selected from the DVD menu.
Reduced idling, biodiesel and new buses have helped Orange County (Fla.) Public Schools lessen the amount of diesel used by its yellow fleet.
Florida district cuts diesel use by 151K gallons in a year

Orange County Public Schools' combined initiative of anti-idling, biodiesel and fuel-efficient buses resulted in an overall reduction of 151,788 gallons of diesel fuel this past year. The economic benefit was a cost avoidance of $538,847 in fuel costs to the district, and the environmental benefit was a reduction of 1,503 metric tons of carbon matter output.
New tool helps lift big tires

The Tire Lifter is designed to make it easier for one person to lift heavy tire and wheel assemblies from horizontal to vertical. The tool can be used to lift mounted 22.5 and 24.5 single tires and 300-lb. super single tires.
Striking Boston bus drivers return to work

After walking off the job on Tuesday, the approximately 300 drivers have returned to work and yellow bus service has resumed for Boston Public Schools. The union that represents the drivers says they agreed to return to work after the contractor that serves the district agreed to meet to discuss driver grievances.
Child’s thank-you note makes bus driver feel appreciated

Alan Boyle, a bus driver for Virginia's Henrico County Public Schools, receives a note of appreciation from one of his passengers and contacts a local news outlet to share it. Boyle tells the news outlet that his “thankless” profession faces constant criticism, but the note makes him feel special.

Cellcontrol technology designed to prevent distracted driving

The technology uses a unique Bluetooth trigger unit coupled with a mobile application on a cell phone to stop the temptation to call, e-mail, text or surf the Internet while a vehicle is in motion. After the software is downloaded on a computer and the trigger unit is installed in a vehicle, Cellcontrol will automatically enforce the operation’s policy for use of mobile devices while driving.
SMI, ROM Corp. combine businesses under acquisition

The companies, which provide safety and productivity products to the school bus and emergency vehicle markets, among others, have been acquired by equity firm The Sterling Group. Joe Uebbing, former CEO of SMI and CEO of the new business, says the transaction will enable the team to continue to develop their diversified specialty vehicle components platform.
Over 2,000 propane school buses now running in Texas

The Propane Council of Texas reports that about 75 Texas school districts are operating buses powered by propane autogas. A 50-cent-per-gallon tax credit for propane has helped districts generate big savings in fuel costs.
Oregon district adds riders but decreases route buses

Last school year, Salem-Keizer Public Schools added two schools and changed bell times. The district's routing team was able to increase efficiency and reduce the number of large buses by 1% and small buses by 2% compared to the previous year.

Great City Schools event to convene transportation directors

The Council of the Great City Schools will bring together directors of transportation from large school districts in conjunction with its 2014 conference of chief operating officers in April. The meeting's theme is "Managing for Results."
300 Boston school bus drivers stage strike

The drivers, who serve Boston Public Schools, are members of United Steelworkers of America Local 8751, and officials for the district say the strike appears to be connected to the union’s opposition to changes underway from the district’s contractor, Veolia Transportation. The strike impacts nearly half of the 33,000 students who receive yellow bus service.
The first available CE Series school buses with the Cummins ISB6.7 engine were produced at the IC Bus Tulsa, Okla., plant last week.

Espar unveils heater kits for school buses

The E-Guardian PLUS Series heater kits include new features that improve heater efficiency and performance. The series package also includes Espar’s Multi-Max controller with a set of PC-programmable features, allowing management to select holiday and vacation days as much as one year in advance, and ambient temperature sensing to prevent heaters from running in warmer mornings.

Transfinder celebrates new headquarters
