Bill would allow ads on Kentucky school buses

Advertisements could only be placed on the exterior of a bus below the bottom of the windows, and they could not promote alcohol or tobacco products. Fifty percent of the net advertising proceeds would go toward classroom use, and a minimum of 25 percent would go toward student transportation.
District approves fingerprint scan pilot program for buses

Desert Sands Unified School District in La Quinta, Calif., will install the fingerprint scanning system for students on six school buses. The system will provide real-time information as to which students are riding the buses, and to what locations.

Man charged for pulling gun on bus driver

On Monday, the bus driver and Blake Gracie, who was driving a jeep, came to a stop at a red light after the bus driver may have inadvertently cut in front of the jeep in traffic. The two flashed obscene gestures at one another, and then Gracie exited the jeep and pointed a rifle at the bus driver.

Transportation cooperative to outfit fleet with digital radio network

Kenwood NEXEDGE radios will be installed on the operation’s buses in December. The radios are part of Mobile Relay Associates’ NEXEDGE Two-Way Radio Repeater Digital Network system, which provides voice, data and GPS capabilities.

Student suffers medical distress on bus, later dies

Staff and students at a Washington high school mourn the loss of senior Drake Blair, who passed away on Monday afternoon. Counselors were available to students on Tuesday, and police are investigating the cause of Blair’s death.
The Powershot 2000 Diesel Propane Injection System can be retrofitted onto a bus’ engine without any modifications to the engine. When installed on a School District of Westfield bus, it helped to decrease exhaust emissions by 60 percent, according to Transportation Director Scott Peterson.

Operations in Arizona and Wisconsin test the system on older school buses and report getting better fuel mileage and seeing substantial reductions in exhaust emissions.

Report: Bus driver acted ‘responsibly’ at railway crossing

A police investigation reveals that during the incident in Milton, Ontario, the bus driver looked and listened for train traffic, then started moving the bus forward. Signals began to alert the arrival of a train, so the driver stopped immediately. A Canadian Pacific Railway employee who witnessed the incident confirmed that the bus was several meters away from the used service tracks and no one was in any danger.

Freightliner recognized for sustainability efforts

The chassis manufacturer receives the 2010 WasteWise Gold Achievement Award for Waste Reduction in the Workplace from the EPA. Freightliner achieved zero waste to landfill status in October 2009, and the company’s employees continually recycle such materials as plastic, paper, aluminum, cardboard, metals, wood and nylon.
