Police investigating suspicious object placed underneath school bus

The Gwinnett County (Ga.) Police Department received a call from a passerby reporting that she observed a female exit her vehicle and place an object underneath a school bus as it was stopped for traffic at an intersection. Police, FBI and fire officials are investigating the incident.
Douglas County School District's new usage-based bus fee program is expected to raise about $2 million, which would offset a substantial portion of the district’s $17-million budget for transportation.

District adds six hybrid buses to fleet

Columbus (Ohio) City Schools received funding of more than $1.1 million to replace old school buses. The new hybrid diesel-electrics were added to the district’s fleet last month.

Police pulled over Timothy Radliff last week after a motorist reported that he was driving his bus erratically while four children were on board. Authorities say that Radliff told them he had taken prescription painkillers, but the man’s attorney said he does not believe that he was under the influence while on the job.
Transportation secretary: Distracted driving study is ‘misleading’

U.S. DOT chief Ray LaHood is referring to a report released on Tuesday by the Highway Loss Data Institute that questions the effectiveness of anti-texting while driving laws to improve traffic safety. LaHood said that the report fails to reconcile with previous research supported by the institute that shows that drivers are four times as likely to crash if using a hand-held device while driving.

Children hit by passing cars in similar accidents last week

Two illegal passing incidents occurred on Friday last week: one in Indiana, one in North Carolina. In both cases, the children struck by oncoming vehicles survived. In Indiana, the 18-year-old motorist is said to have been using her cell phone at the time of the accident.
Durham School Services wins Mississippi contract

The contractor began providing student transportation services to Hinds County School District on Aug. 11. The 105 new buses are equipped with air conditioning systems, GPS, video cameras and electronic child-check reminder systems to help ensure student safety.

Texting and use of devices has jumped to 2.7 percent of drivers at any time, with young women the most frequent violators. Current penalties are inadequate to deter the behavior, officials say.
Student Transportation achieves best fiscal year in its history

In June, five members of Congress and a senator wrote a joint letter to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner asking him to clarify the federal fuel tax exemption policy for school bus operators. Geithner responded in July and stated that the law does not limit the exemption based on size of a school bus.

After some IRS offices challenged operators’ claims of exemptions for smaller school buses earlier this year, the NSTA presented the issue to members of Congress, who asked Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to clarify the tax policy. Geithner stated that the law does not limit the fuel tax exemption based on size of the bus, and the IRS cases have been dismissed.

Retired bus to be converted into mobile rehab center

The Putnam County Schools bus will be outfitted with an air conditioning system, an onboard generator, pre-piped oxygen connections and a refrigerator. Local fire department officials hope to accommodate up to 12 people in the vehicle to provide medical services.
