Panic button alerts students to passing cars

With a new feature from Transportation Safety Products, the school bus driver can push a button if vehicles pass beyond a certain point while the bus is stopped to load or unload students. The button activates an audible warning and emergency strobe lights to alert children of the danger.

School districts and bus companies would be permitted to equip their buses with the technology to capture illegal bus passers under House Bill 1580. Rep. Seth Grove, who introduced the legislation, says utilizing the cameras “can provide increased accountability of drivers and remove the burden from school bus drivers to bear witness to all facets of the violations when their primary goal is to ensure the safe transportation of the children in their charge.”

More than 1,500 school bus passing violations were counted in Washington's one-day survey earlier this year. Under state legislation passed in 2011, school districts have the authority to equip buses with stop-arm cameras, and state Superintendent Randy Dorn is urging districts "to look into whether installing the cameras is the right thing for that community.”
Teen allegedly attacks bus driver after stop-arm running

Bus driver Alvin Lanning had stopped to pick up students when a white BMW passed his bus, so he later wrote down the vehicle’s license plate number to turn in for a traffic violation. The teen driver saw this, and according to a report given to Orange County sheriff’s deputies, he confronted Lanning, punching him in the face and taking his glasses.

The increased maximum fine for a first offense of stop-arm running goes into effect Sept. 1. The director of the Texas Department of Public Safety says that his agency "will not tolerate individuals who disregard the law and illegally pass stopped school buses."

The office also reminds drivers of the state’s laws regarding stopping for school buses.

In this year's one-day survey, 6,807 vehicles illegally passed stopped school buses in Georgia. That's down from 8,102 in 2011. Still, State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge calls the numbers "very alarming" and urges the public to make student safety a priority.
85K stop-arm violations in national count

This year’s survey conducted by the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services finds 85,279 violations in a single day, which is down from last year’s count of 88,025. More than half (57.5%) of the vehicles passed the buses from the front, while 42.5% of those counted passed the buses from the rear.

The three-week effort led by the state Department of Education will be used as an opportunity to remind motorists to obey all traffic laws whenever they are near a school bus. South Carolina stop-arm campaign gains momentum

During last week’s South Carolina Association for Pupil Transportation annual conference and trade show, attendees hear from Sen. Thomas Alexander, who urges them to contact local legislators in support of a bill that would increase the penalties for stop-arm violators. Anderson School District Five's David Poag also reveals that he is incorporating the Steffi Crossing Enhancer as part of the educational component of his S.A.V.E. (Stop-Arm Violation Education campaign).
North Carolina approves stiffer penalties for bus passers

Gov. Pat McCrory signs into law a bill that stipulates that the fines for bus-passing violators would range from $500 to $2,500, depending on whether the motorist is guilty of a misdemeanor or a felony. The bill — known as The Hasani N. Wesley Students' School Bus Safety Act — also includes provisions regarding license revocation.
88 stop-arm runners cited in camera program

During the 2012-13 school year, police in New Britain, Conn., issued 88 illegal-passing citations as part of an enforcement program using the Redflex Student Guardian system. Four local school buses are equipped with the camera system.
