Houston district trains for disaster with overturned bus

School bus drivers and attendants at Houston Independent School District this year are undergoing counter-terrorism training, which includes a mock disaster drill. The event involves an older bus turned on its side and staged injuries, allowing the staff members to practice their first aid training.

California's First District Court of Appeal finds that Richard Schoenfeld has completed his sentence for the crime of kidnapping 26 Chowchilla schoolchildren and their school bus driver in 1976. The decision becomes final at the end of April unless the state Board of Parole Hearings files an appeal.

Bus security DVD sent to nation’s school districts

The Transportation Security Administration is mailing the School Bus First Observer and School Transportation Security Awareness programs to around 15,000 public school districts, urging administrators to use them for in-service training. Agency official Steve Sprague also tells SBF that First Observer will continue beyond the three-year grant that created it.
Police find explosives at N.M. school bus stop

An abandoned backpack is filled with Molotov cocktails at the stop, which is located less than half a mile from a middle school. Investigators are looking at security tapes from cameras on school buses to see if they can spot any students with the backpack.

Bus drivers could be given authority to search students

Under a proposal before an Indiana district’s school board, a driver would have to have a reasonable suspicion that a student has an item or substance that puts others on the bus in danger. The driver would then have to get permission from the district’s transportation department before searching a student or his or her belongings.

New York state lawmakers received the e-mails last Friday. Homeland security and counter-terrorism officials determine the threats are not credible, but transportation departments are advised to watch for suspicious activity on bus routes.
Student charged with felony for bomb threat

Police say that a school bus driver saw the 11-year-old boy on the bus with a device that resembled a bomb, and that the driver heard the boy threaten to detonate it on the bus or in a school. SWAT teams determine that there are no explosives on the device, but police take the boy into custody.
