Investigators who respond to the incident believe that as pickup truck driver Angela Brown approached a traffic signal on a highway’s off-ramp, she failed to stop, smashing into the rear of a police-owned Ford Fusion, and then striking the rear of the school bus as she continued on. One student on the bus is treated for a minor injury.

The recommendation to all 50 states and the District of Columbia is to outlaw the non-emergency use of portable electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle. Following its investigation of the 2010 truck-school bus crash in Gray Summit, Mo., the agency also makes recommendations on school bus evacuations, inspections and driver training.

In the August 2010 accident in Gray Summit, a school bus struck the back of a pickup truck and then was struck by another school bus. Two teens were killed.

A sheriff's deputy who reviewed a video of the incident in Michigan last month says Eileen Marie Delaney fell from the driver's seat into the entrance well of her bus during a left turn because she was not wearing a seat belt. The bus crashed into a garage, and Delaney suffered minor injuries.
Report: Bus driver was 'drowsy' on day of fatal crash

Bus driver Kenneth Ross Herringdine, who tested positive following the October 2010 accident for an ingredient found in cough medicine that can cause fatigue, is sentenced to a year of probation and receives a $600 fine for failing to stay in his lane. Students told investigators that on the day of the crash, Herringdine seemed drowsy while operating the bus.

Bus driver Kenneth Paul receives an aboriginal star blanket ceremony and a provincial plaque from Manitoba Aboriginal Affairs Minister Eric Robinson. Last month, Paul was transporting students home when he saw a car coming, slowed down and pulled off to the shoulder of the road to move out of the way as much as possible before the car struck the bus.
