Calif. agency adds $10K to vouchers for hybrid buses

Thomas Built’s Saf-T-Liner C2e hybrid school bus and IC Bus’ CE Series bus with a hybrid-electric system are eligible for the funding as part of the California Air Resources Board's Hybrid Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project. Joe Calavita, air pollution specialist for the agency, tells SBF that previously, most buses were eligible for $20,000 each, and now pupil transporters can get $30,000, plus $5,000 for the first bus purchased.

Ford, Georgia Tech partner on hydraulic hybrid bus conversion

The Ford Motor Co. Fund and the Georgia Institute of Technology partner for the “Green Eco School Bus,” a project focused on converting an existing school bus into a hydraulic hybrid that runs on recycled biofuel. Atlanta Public Schools donated the 16-passenger unit, and officials say installation is nearly complete.

The school bus manufacturer has zero-waste-to-landfill operations, meaning that everything received or produced by Thomas Built is used, reused, recycled or sold, and nothing is sent to a landfill. The company is also participating in a solar panel project, and all of its manufacturing facilities became ISO 14001 certified last year.
California agency designates $19M for hybrid vehicle voucher program

Under the California Air Resources Board’s Hybrid Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Program, public and private fleets statewide can reserve a voucher for up to $40,000 for fuel-efficient hybrid medium- and heavy-duty vehicles through a participating dealership when the vehicle is ordered. The voucher will be redeemed at the time of purchase.
Eaton system available for IC Bus hybrid

Eaton Corp. worked with IC Bus to specially design its hybrid system for school bus deployment. The hybrid bus combines the MaxxForce DT engine with an electric motor that has a peak power output of 44 kilowatt.

Kentucky districts take delivery of Thomas Built hybrids

Twenty Saf-T-Liner C2e hybrid school buses are being sent to 13 districts, with the last delivery scheduled for Oct. 15. The buses were purchased through a $12.9 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant to the state, which will allow for the replacement of up to 200 of its oldest buses throughout the next school year.
