Gov. Sam Brownback proclaimed last Wednesday School Bus Drivers' Appreciation Day in the state. Rannie and Diana Schmidt were among those in the spotlight. The driving duo came across an accident last year and provided critical aid to a mother and daughter.

The event involves an older bus turned on its side and staged injuries, allowing the staff members to practice their first aid training.

Oscar Juracan noticed that a boy on the bus was not breathing, and the trainer quickly responded to perform abdominal thrusts on the elementary student. Spring (Texas) ISD requires all of its trainers to take a CPR course.

A Massachusetts law that requires first aid training for school bus drivers was passed in 2008, after 5-year-old Darnell Cobb choked while riding a bus. Now, the state House has approved a bill to name that measure “Darnell’s Law.”
