Teen fatally struck by tractor-trailer

The accident occurs when Aniya Williams is trying to catch a city bus in Staten Island, N.Y. Williams used to ride a school bus, but service to her school was eliminated. Last week, the state Senate passed a bill to mandate that the city Department of Education provide school bus transportation to children in grades three through eight who live more than one mile from school.

Fourteen-year-old Jorge Saavedra faces a charge of manslaughter for the incident on Monday. Deputies say he stabbed 16-year-old Dylan Nuno as the two exited their school bus; Nuno was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The trainee driver had passed the "S" endorsement written test and was undergoing the required hours of training. He had been scheduled to finalize his skills assessment for the endorsement last Wednesday, two days after the accident. The school district will now review the training for all of its bus drivers to ensure that they are fully certified.
Vigil to be held for bus crash victim

Students will gather at Temple High School in Georgia on Tuesday night to remember Rashawn Walker, who was killed on Monday when his school bus hit a ditch and fell over. Twelve other students were reportedly hurt in the accident.
