Texas district’s transportation services honored for sustainability

The Houston Independent School District wins the National Association of Fleet Administrators Excellence in Public Fleet Sustainability award for 2013. The district is recognized for its use of alternative fuels and partnership with the University of Houston to test a school bus filter that will convert smog-producing pollutants emitted from engines into water and nitrogen gas.
$9 million available for new round of clean diesel grants

The U.S. EPA is now soliciting proposals for the 2013 National Clean Diesel Funding Program. The program, funded by the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act, provides grants to retrofit or replace older diesel school buses and other vehicles.
Cleaire assets acquired by ESW

Cleaire, which offered a variety of diesel particulate filters to retrofit school buses and other vehicles, closed in January. Environmental Solutions Worldwide has now acquired Cleaire's product line and certain assets, and California air officials say that the company "is committed to providing technical and warranty support to Cleaire customers."
DERA report to Congress highlights school bus retrofits

The U.S. EPA’s new report to Congress includes insight into the significant role of school buses in the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act program. Among the notable projects was the state of Mississippi replacing 52 school buses and equipping 2,000 more with emissions-reducing technologies.
7 school districts awarded grants for bus retrofits

The Jefferson County, Mo., districts will receive a total of $300,000 to equip school buses with emission-reducing equipment. The funding comes from lead producer Doe Run as part of an agreement with the EPA.
TV spot focuses on CNG school buses

Long-running public television program MotorWeek does a segment on Pennsylvania's Lower Merion School District, which has close to half of its 114 buses running on compressed natural gas (CNG). The district plans to go all-CNG when more fueling stations are available.
Diesel retrofit supplier Cleaire shuts down

The company, which offered a variety of diesel particulate filters to retrofit school buses and other vehicles, closed last month. Cleaire’s LongMile filter has reportedly been linked to brush fires and was voluntarily recalled last year. A California Air Resources Board official says that “it is paramount that the safety concerns with the Cleaire LongMile system are immediately addressed.”
Missouri lead producer to provide $300,000 for bus retrofits

As part of an agreement with the EPA, the Doe Run Co. will offer a total of $500,000 to help Missouri districts retrofit diesel school buses and improve environmental practices in school science labs. Districts in Jefferson County, Mo., get first crack at the grants.
EPA names winners of $2 million in school bus rebates

Agency officials call the response from school bus fleets “overwhelming” — there were more than 1,000 applications for rebates. The 30 randomly chosen recipients include school districts and contractors from various states.
Ariz. district buys 13 propane school buses

Glendale Elementary School District acquires six Blue Bird propane buses and seven Collins propane buses — the district's first powered by the alternative fuel. Canyon State Bus Sales' Phil Polizzatto calls the district's decision "both financially and environmentally responsible."
Webasto, ESW integrate pollution-control technologies

They also say that the combined technologies can help fleet owner/operators to obtain Diesel Emission Reduction Act funding for emission-control and idle-reduction equipment.
Ohio EPA awards $277K for pollution-control technology

Eight school districts in the state receive a total of $277,885.53 in grants to install diesel oxidation catalysts and anti-idling equipment on their school buses as part of the agency’s Clean Diesel School Bus Grant program. The next grant application deadline is March 1, and priority is given to applicants in areas that do not meet federal air quality standards for fine particulates.

Thomas Built to develop CNG-fueled Type C

The school bus manufacturer announces at the NAPT Summit that it will develop a Saf-T-Liner C2 powered by compressed natural gas. Also, Thomas Built’s new propane Type A is now in production, and its propane Type C is expected to be available next year.

School buses are among the vehicles being replaced or retrofitted in the latest round of funding for the Diesel Emission Reduction Program, also known as DERA. Sioux Falls (S.D.) School District, for example, is being awarded $450,000 for replacing 18 school buses.

Navistar reveals new engine emission technology

The manufacturer will introduce a next-generation clean engine solution to meet the 2010 EPA emissions regulations and to position the company to meet greenhouse gas rules ahead of 2014 and 2017 requirements, officials announce. A Navistar spokesperson tells SBF that the short-term focus for the technology is on big-bore engines.
