Cooperative helps districts save money, time

Walla Walla (Wash.) School District won matching funds from the state to obtain funds for a facility to support a cooperative that serves three school district transportation departments, and it hasn’t cost taxpayers additional tax dollars. The Southeast Washington Transportation Cooperative provides vehicle maintenance at a fraction of the cost of local shops as well as a driver training program that saves districts staff and time.

New bus depot to save district $400K in fuel, driver pay

Sarasota County Schools builds the depot in North Port, Fla., which the transportation director says reduces the number of empty miles the drivers had been traveling from the old depot to their first and last pickups of the day. Pickup times and routes aren’t expected to change.
District revamps transportation, reduces late buses by 97%

Tennessee’s Metro Nashville Public Schools restructured the department last fall, and officials say the number of late morning buses has decreased 69% since Oct. 1, and the number of late afternoon buses has decreased 28%. Customer service and turnaround time on bus repairs have also improved.
Georgia districts to share buses for field trips

Under the agreement, students from Cobb County School District could be transported to and from events with Marietta City Schools students and vice versa, with each district paying the other up front for the use of their buses. The transportation director for Marietta says that when the districts have shared services in the past, it has saved $100 to $500 depending on the trip.

Alfred Karam named SBF's Administrator of the Year

The director of transportation at Bethlehem Central School District in Delmar, N.Y., has adopted a businesslike approach to running the transportation department, while also focusing on student safety. The transportation team was able to reduce its overall transportation budget by about $900,000 for the 2012-13 school year, and tracking key performance indicators has increased efficiency.

District cracks down on bus drivers parking at home

An audit finds that of Jefferson County (Ala.) School District’s 400 buses, drivers are taking 61 of them home each day to places farther than their bus route, adding nearly $172,000 in fuel costs. The deputy superintendent is talking with drivers about finding a more cost-efficient place to park their buses.

Roberts Hawaii, Ground Transport to bus students in Oahu

The contracts will start with the 2014-15 school year — Roberts Hawaii receives 181 routes, and Ground Transport receives 124 routes. This is the latest step in the Hawaii State Department of Education’s “Get on Board” initiative, which aims to reform the state’s student transportation system.

Wyoming district gets iPads for school buses

At Sheridan County School District #1, 20 iPads have been assigned to 20 vehicles, which allows the transportation staff to ensure that any bus driver has access to the technology that is available through the device, including road and travel reports, weather conditions, health information about students and students’ addresses. Transportation Director Lori Thornburg discusses with SBF how the iPads are helping to increase safety and efficiency.

200 more students to get bus service in Hawaii

Beginning in November, the State Department of Education's "Get on Board" pilot program will provide school transportation to about 200 more students. The first phase of the initiative restored service to about 350 students at the beginning of the school year.

Thermo King unveils HVAC solutions at NAPT

The supplier is showcasing its StudentAIRE line, which is designed to be compact and affordable for school bus operators, manufacturers and dealers. The line, which will be featured at the Thermo King booth during the trade show on Tuesday and Wednesday, includes a high performance air-conditioning system requiring minimal space; a bulkhead evaporator for small to mid-size school bus applications; and two split air-conditioning systems.
Florida district cuts diesel use by 151K gallons in a year

Orange County Public Schools' combined initiative of anti-idling, biodiesel and fuel-efficient buses resulted in an overall reduction of 151,788 gallons of diesel fuel this past year. The economic benefit was a cost avoidance of $538,847 in fuel costs to the district, and the environmental benefit was a reduction of 1,503 metric tons of carbon matter output.
Oregon district adds riders but decreases route buses

Last school year, Salem-Keizer Public Schools added two schools and changed bell times. The district's routing team was able to increase efficiency and reduce the number of large buses by 1% and small buses by 2% compared to the previous year.
Great City Schools event to convene transportation directors
