Medford Township Public Schools continually seeks out opportunities to grow its sustainability practices, reduce transportation costs and generate revenue, which have been accomplished through such initiatives as a solar project, shared bus service and running vehicles on biodiesel. From the solar project alone, the district has realized savings of $300,000 annually.

District opts to lease buses

The town of Scituate in Massachusetts plans to lease three new buses this year for Scituate Public Schools instead of buying one new bus. The plan is an effort to accommodate competing costs in the district’s budget and supplement an aging fleet.
Iowa district moves to stop ineligible bus riders

Waterloo Community Schools will mail postcards with bus stop information to all eligible riders instead of printing it in a local newspaper to help prevent students who do not qualify for service from catching a ride. The district’s superintendent says a “significant” number of students who don’t qualify for service ride at no cost, and one of the district’s goals is to reduce routes and save money.
Missouri district to transition fleet to CNG

In a 10-year lease-purchase agreement, Lee’s Summit R-7 School District will replace its diesel fleet with 149 Thomas Built school buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). The district’s program also includes a shift toward CNG-powered facility maintenance trucks and continued use of all-electric delivery trucks.
District revamps busing to offset $20M budget shortfall

Among the changes to take effect on Aug. 26 at Maryland's Harford County Public Schools are four new elementary schools being added to the fourth tier schedule, elimination of previously approved exemptions to the district’s transportation policy, depot bus stops established for magnet school students, and consolidated bus stops established for middle and high school bus routes. Officials say the changes will save the district approximately $890,000.

Mesa Public Schools has purchased 55 Blue Bird Propane-Powered Vision school buses and six wheelchair accessible buses to increase its propane bus total to 89.
