At the annual conference of state pupil transportation directors, NHTSA Administrator David Strickland touts the safety and environmental benefits of the “humble yellow school bus,” as he calls it. NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman credits state directors and others in the industry for their work to prevent school bus-train crashes.

Registration extended for special-needs conference

The standard fees are extended until Feb. 29 for the National Conference on Transporting Students with Disabilities & Preschoolers, to be held March 9-14 in Orlando, Fla. The registration fees will increase on March 1.
Bus security DVD sent to nation’s school districts

The Transportation Security Administration is mailing the School Bus First Observer and School Transportation Security Awareness programs to around 15,000 public school districts, urging administrators to use them for in-service training. Agency official Steve Sprague also tells SBF that First Observer will continue beyond the three-year grant that created it.
NHTSA unveils school bus promotional posters

The materials display eye-catching charts and facts on why parents should choose the school bus over other modes of transportation for their kids. “Students are about 50 times more likely to arrive at school alive if they take the bus than if they drive themselves or ride with friends,” one of the posters declares.

Annual association conferences: off to Ohio

This year’s NASDPTS and NAPT conferences will be held in Cincinnati, covering such topics as student behavior challenges, stop-arm violations and maintaining a transportation program under serious budget restraints. The NAPT trade show will feature more than 100 exhibits from industry suppliers.

Jessica Brookshire will share with attendees her passion for and the mission of K.A.R.M.A: Kids Against Ridicule, Meanness and Aggression, which she founded. Brookshire has appeared at schools across Alabama and Georgia, speaking to more than 85,000 children in two years on behalf of the organization.
NAPT awards over a dozen scholarships

The scholarships cover the cost of registration to attend the 2011 Annual NAPT Summit, which will be held in Cincinnati next month. The funding for nine of the scholarships was provided by Zonar Systems. The funding for four of the scholarships was provided by Peter Lawrence, director of transportation for the Fairport (N.Y.) Central School District, and his wife, Linda.

Special-needs conference to offer over 40 hours of training

Registration is now open for the 2012 National Conference on Transporting Students with Disabilities & Preschoolers, to be held in Orlando, Fla., March 9-14. Sessions will include “Compliance Versus Excellence,” “Medications on the School Bus,” and “Couples Therapy” — for relationships between transportation and special-ed departments.

Call me old-fashioned, but I still think the ideal is to talk face to face. The upcoming Annual Summit of the National Association for Pupil Transportation is one of the best ways to make connections and talk face to face with school bus industry peers.

Those are among the topics that keynote presenters will discuss during the event, according to the tentative agenda, which is now available. Workshops and breakout sessions will cover such issues as working with principals and other building administrators, and distracted driving.

Officials say the module determines actual versus potential riders on a bus and a ridership trend can then be tracked.

U.S. Rep. Tim Scott will deliver a keynote speech to school bus contractors at the NSTA Annual Meeting and Convention in Baltimore. Scott has spoken in support of privatization efforts in his state, South Carolina.
California DOE offers special-needs transportation conference

The Office of School Transportation's two-day Transporting Children with Special Needs Conference will be held at two locations this month. Course topics to be covered include pupil loading and unloading, accident investigation and documentation.
