NAPT News & Views — NAPT acts against violence on school buses

The association is planning to offer several workshops on violence prevention at the NAPT Summit in Memphis, Tenn., later this year. Officials are reaching out to law enforcement and other agencies, legal experts and professional educators to put together an agenda packed with experts on this and other important topics.

District targets bus bullying with adult monitors

Under the effort at Bonneville County Joint School District 93 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, volunteers will ride on some of the district’s buses, taking note of inappropriate behavior. Guy Bliesner, health, safety and security coordinator for the district, tells SBF that the volunteers will also distribute “bus bucks” — which can be redeemed for prizes — to students who behave well.
Ohio bill would require schools to address bus bullying

The Jessica Logan Act, which will now go before Gov. John Kasich for approval, would mandate that schools provide education to students on bullying and develop policies to address the issue both online and on the school bus.

The school bus contractor is named 2011 Company of the Year by the nonprofit organization Unique Gifted Loveable You. Student Transportation Inc.'s bullying prevention training programs, which include having drivers maintain a positive bus environment, helped the company earn the accolade.

Houston Independent School District bus drivers renew their efforts to promote bus safety by taking a stand against bullying. The district's buses are fitted with signage that makes it clear to students that bullying will not be tolerated, and drivers learn strategies to create a positive environment on the bus.

Jessica Brookshire will share with attendees her passion for and the mission of K.A.R.M.A: Kids Against Ridicule, Meanness and Aggression, which she founded. Brookshire has appeared at schools across Alabama and Georgia, speaking to more than 85,000 children in two years on behalf of the organization.

Bus drivers, mechanics, monitors and office staff for the school bus contractor donned blue T-shirts on Monday in support of the Stomp Out Bullying campaign’s “Blue Shirt Day.” The employees were promoting the reduction and prevention of bullying on the school bus.

Founder Gina Crump travels to schools in a bus equipped with flat-screen televisions and a sound system and teaches students how to "respect the ride," she tells SBF. NAPT News & Views — Bullying: committing to positive interventions

The association discusses steps that it has taken and continues to take to reduce the incidence of bullying on board school buses. These efforts include partnering with the U.S. Dept. of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools to make available free professional training for the school bus industry to encourage positive interventions.

Online reporting tool provides proactive approach to bullying prevention

Joe Bruzzese, an instructor at at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Westmont College, creates Sprigeo.com to provide students with a safe, easy way to report on bullying. The system, he tells SBF, helps school administrators prevent violence on the bus and in school.
New laws target safety at school, on the bus

Several of the changes brought about by bills signed into law in Virginia focus on pupil transportation. They include restricting sex offenders' access to school buses and allowing video cameras on buses to record illegal passing.
