With the Patron Attendance and Tracking Solution, created by Kevin McGuire of Michigan City (Ind.) Area Schools, bus personnel select students' photos on a tablet as they board or exit the bus. After fully implementing the app on its special-needs buses, the district expects a 20% increase in Medicaid reimbursements.
Update: Fired bus supervisor won't face charges

Heidi Mullin was fired after being captured by a cell phone video pushing a 7-year-old student off of her. The county prosecutor finds that while Mullin's actions "were not the best," charges would not be filed against her for pushing the boy away "when he had his coat over her head and she said she had difficulty breathing.”

The transportation supervisor, riding the bus in the role of an aide, can be seen in a cell phone video pushing the student into the bus window. The 7-year-old boy was reportedly "yelling and screaming and jumping around" and pulled a sweatshirt over the supervisor’s head “with his whole body.”

The event involves an older bus turned on its side and staged injuries, allowing the staff members to practice their first aid training.

Assemblywoman Connie Wagner is pushing legislation that would augment criminal background check requirements for school bus personnel to include all adults given responsibility for the safety of schoolchildren, which she said would close a loophole that left out bus aides. The measure also would enhance penalties against any employee found tampering with a school bus' onboard monitoring device.
District: Student’s fall from bus ‘could have been avoided’

Officials arrive at this conclusion following an investigation of a June incident in which a special-needs student jumped from the rear exit of the moving bus and fell onto a freeway. A district spokesman says the driver and aide did not adhere to district policy — the aide, for instance, was sitting at the front of the bus instead of in the middle to monitor students.

Police conclude an investigation of alleged inappropriate behavior by aide Bobby Shrout, who was accused of kissing a student on the cheek. After conducting interviews and reviewing bus surveillance footage, authorities determine that Shrout did not commit a criminal offense.

Driver, aide use training to calm autistic student

The student became agitated due to the high volume of traffic on the freeway, broke a window in his school van and attempted to lean out and touch other vehicles. The driver and aide created a game for the student, urging him to count traffic lights until they were able to exit the freeway; they then pointed out familiar landmarks to help him keep track of his location on the drive to school.
