Houston Independent School District’s school bus fleet receives the award from Government Fleet magazine. The district’s winning application included details on its creation of a music video that addressed bus seating and bullying; how it streamlined its fleet and saved $11.98 million; and how the district successfully took on bus service for an adjoining school district.
Transportation department awarded for recruitment efforts

Houston Independent School District’s transportation department receives a community service award from the Near Northwest Management District for these efforts. The department partners with this agency to recruit bus drivers who live in the area that the Near Northwest Management District serves, and it also has a recruiting team at each bus terminal that visits neighborhoods, businesses and churches to recruit drivers.

The attendance competition among Houston Independent School District's four bus terminals was timed during a week of state testing for students. Lillie Lewis of the Tensas Parish School Board receives the 2013-14 Statewide Bus Driver of the Year award from the Property Casualty Alliance of Louisiana, and Shelley Wilkenson of Midlothian (Texas) Independent School District receives the award from the alliance's Texas chapter. Awards given through this program are based on such driver attributes as leadership, attitude, perseverance, student and parent relationships, and technical skill.
6-year-old Texas girl struck by school bus, later dies

Police said they believe that Jada Craft may have been running late and was trying to catch the bus when she was struck. She later died at her home. Investigators are expected to review the bus’ video surveillance cameras to determine how the accident happened.

The three children on a Copperas Cove (Texas) Independent School District bus are restrained in their wheelchairs when the bus is broadsided by a car. They are left hanging upside down and have to be cut free of their restraints, but they, along with the bus driver and attendant, only sustain minor injuries.
District launches security, transit management system

Dallas County Schools begins using Force Multiplier Solutions’ BusGuard. The security and transit management system includes real-time video and audio, GPS, a thumbprint scanner, and multiple interior cameras and stop-arm cameras.

Texas district to equip buses with stop-arm cameras

The Georgetown Independent School District and the Georgetown Police Department partner with road safety camera provider American Traffic Solutions to crack down on illegal passing of school buses. A statewide survey in Texas last year found 9,825 instances of stop-arm running in one day.
City council approves $300 stop-arm running fine

The San Marcos (Texas) City Council has approved a $300 civil penalty for illegally passing a school bus following a 15-week study conducted by BusGuard, a company that provides stop-arm cameras for school buses, that shed light on the severity of the problem.

Bus driver defends girl from dog attack

Denise Dolcoe, a school bus driver for Fort Bend (Texas) Independent School District, was on her afternoon route when she noticed a pit bull attacking a girl. Officials say that the driver immediately stopped her bus, grabbed a bucket and ran to the girl’s defense.
Texas district cuts fuel costs by 33% with propane buses

Seguin Independent School District has been operating propane-powered school buses for six years, and it currently has 28 buses running on the fuel in its fleet, with plans to purchase more in the future. In addition to the savings in fuel costs, officials say the district has saved $500,000 since 2008 through the initial reimbursement for the purchase of the buses and the rebate on the fuel.
Houston drivers get creative for ‘School Bus Shuffle’ video

In honor of National School Bus Safety Week, Houston Independent School District’s transportation team created the video, which covers such topics as proper boarding procedures, how to sit on the bus and the importance of reporting bullying. Transportation Field Safety Investigator Curtis Harris wrote the song and choreographed its accompanying dance.
