Pennsylvania district's bus drivers vote to remove union

After petitioning the National Labor Relations Board and getting free legal assistance, the school bus drivers are allowed to hold a secret-ballot election to determine whether to keep Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1729 as their bargaining representative. Nearly 90% of the drivers casting ballots vote to remove the union.
District aims to cut costs in busing with hub transfers

Starting next year at Quakertown (Pa.) Community School District, private and charter school students will be transported to hub locations and will then transfer to another bus for the rest of the trip. The district superintendent calls the move "an important cost-saving measure."
Bill targets training, immunity for bus drivers who use EpiPen

The Pennsylvania bill would provide civil immunity to school bus drivers who administer epinephrine autoinjectors, or EpiPens, on students who experience allergic reactions on the bus. Drivers would have to first complete a training program to be qualified to use the EpiPen.
District runs first ad inside school bus

Durham takes over Atlantic Express' Philadelphia operations

Durham will operate student transportation services for the School District of Philadelphia, which adds 364 buses, 320 routes and more than 500 employees to the company’s existing operations. To welcome the newly hired team members, Durham held an employee kickoff event, which included a barbecue lunch and distribution of new safety vests.
Driver arrested after allegedly ordering students off bus

Wesner Laventure is arraigned on 20 counts each of reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of children. Police are notified of the situation by the mother of one of the students, who was told by other children that Laventure had forced a number of passengers off the bus at different locations, including busy highways.

Conference to provide insight on travel instruction

The Consortium for the Educational Advancement of Travel Instruction will host “Working Together: Building Bridges Towards Independence” April 4 and 5 in Pittsburgh. Sessions will focus on such topics as how to provide travel-related skills within a student’s curriculum to prepare him or her for life after high school, as well as answers to basic questions when considering establishing a travel instruction program.
Audio recordings allowed on Pennsylvania school buses

Under the recently approved legislation, school boards that want to use audio recordings on school buses or school vehicles for disciplinary or security purposes have to adopt a policy that authorizes their use, and school boards also have to send parents written notices at the beginning of each school year about audio bus recordings. The Pennsylvania School Bus Association says the legislation “will be a step closer towards a safer school bus environment."
District must bus student to both parents’ homes

The Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania rules that a school district in Lancaster must provide the service to the student from both of his divorced parents’ homes, upholding an older ruling by a county judge who found that the district was violating the state Public School Code by refusing to provide such service. The Commonwealth Court judge notes that the school bus that serves the neighborhood has empty seats and could accommodate the boy without adding another stop along its route.
Krapf names chief operating officer of school bus division

Jim Folkes joined Krapf Bus Companies in 2010 and most recently served as vice president of Krapf School Bus. Krapf Bus Companies has also promoted Shawn McGlinchey to vice president of risk management. He previously served as director of risk management.
Pennsylvania House approves audio recordings bill

The legislation would permit the use of the recordings on school buses, but school boards would have to vote on policies outlining the audiotaping rules, and parents would have to be notified. The bill had been approved by the state Senate in June, and it has since been amended to also allow police to use audio-equipped cameras anywhere except in a residence without prior court approval.

School districts and bus companies would be permitted to equip their buses with the technology to capture illegal bus passers under House Bill 1580. Rep. Seth Grove, who introduced the legislation, says utilizing the cameras “can provide increased accountability of drivers and remove the burden from school bus drivers to bear witness to all facets of the violations when their primary goal is to ensure the safe transportation of the children in their charge.”
Pittsburgh Pirates support school bus safety event

A group of volunteers, including many people in the pupil transportation industry, planned and participated in the event, in which the volunteers provided tours of school buses and distributed flyers on yellow bus laws and other safety materials prior to a Pirates baseball game. Bus floor mock-up built for wheelchair tiedown training

The floor features retractable straps for securing a wheelchair in a bus. The supervisor of transportation for Pennsylvania’s Upper Merion Area School District conceived the idea, and Director of Operations Frederick Remelius tells SBF that it has enabled bus drivers and aides to easily practice the procedure several times in the training area instead of having to do it inside a crowded bus.
Mom accused of punching child’s friend on bus

Jessica A. Brown is arrested and arraigned, and faces charges of simple assault against a child, unauthorized school bus entry, disorderly conduct and harassment. Documents state that the boy told police that Brown, who is the mother of one of his friends, punched him in his right eye.

New Pennsylvania legislation passed by the state Senate and under consideration in the House would permit the use of such recordings for disciplinary or security purposes, but only if a school board adopts a policy to allow the practice and notifies students and parents of the policy.
Krapf awards $25,000 in educational scholarships

The Pennsylvania-based school bus contractor continues its 22-year tradition of offering scholarships to deserving seniors at each of the high schools for which it provides student transportation. Among the 2013 recipients is Lauren Ahern, who attends Downingtown (Pa.) High School West.
District appeals decision to reinstate bus driver after DUI
June 10, 2013
The driver was arrested while off duty over a holiday weekend in 2011, and he was suspended and then fired after telling his supervisor of the incident. This May, the driver was granted his job back after an arbiter found that the district was “too harsh” when firing him, but district officials are hoping to overturn that decision.
