The Ohio Association for Pupil Transportation honors Toledo Public Schools' Brad Aemisegger with the William Rice Award of Excellence, which designates the state's transportation supervisor of the year. Aemisegger got his start in the industry almost 30 years ago as a school bus driver for the Toledo district.

The Ohio mother passes the bus while it is stopped, with its lights flashing and stop sign activated, to pick up another child for school, and police cite the woman. The bus driver says that she had stopped at the child's home, but the child was not ready, so she continued on her route.

Driver shortage expected to impact bus schedules

At Columbus (Ohio) City Schools, an effort has fallen through to contract for temporary bus drivers to cover routes while permanent drivers complete their training and earn their commercial driver’s license. Officials say that morning elementary school routes may run up to 30 minutes late, and there may be some delays for high school bus passengers in the afternoon.
First Student to serve Ohio district under 10-year contract

The company will begin providing transportation services for Valley View Local Schools in Germantown on July 1, and First Student will install additional safety features on the district's school buses, including GPS, onboard digital video cameras and Child Check-Mate electronic reminder systems. Man facing kidnapping charges was fired as school bus driver

Ariel Castro, the man who allegedly kidnapped and raped three Cleveland women, committed multiple violations as a school bus driver, which resulted in his firing last November. His infractions include leaving a child on a bus, making an illegal U-turn in rush hour traffic with a busload of students, and using the school bus to do his grocery shopping.
IC Bus to provide 300 school buses to Ohio district

Deputies in Piketon, Ohio, say Tuesday’s accident occurred as the bus was crossing a one-lane bridge. The bus driver lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the house after the driver of a Jeep tried to cross the bridge at the same time when the bus was only halfway across.

Bullets found on school buses in Ohio, Florida

In Friday’s incident in Ohio, a student turns in what appears to be a .22 caliber bullet that was on the bus’ floor, and an investigation continues as to how the bullet got on the bus. In Monday’s incident in Florida, a 9 millimeter bullet is found on a bus, and a student comes forward and says it had fallen out of his pocket on the bus.

Cleveland City Council aims to increase bus-passing penalties

Councilman Kevin Conwell introduces an ordinance that would upgrade the violation from a minor misdemeanor to a first-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail, a $1,000 fine and a license suspension of up to three years. Conwell and his colleagues push for the measure following motorist Shena Hardin’s bus-passing violation and "idiot sign" sentence.
Ohio EPA awards $277K for pollution-control technology

Eight school districts in the state receive a total of $277,885.53 in grants to install diesel oxidation catalysts and anti-idling equipment on their school buses as part of the agency’s Clean Diesel School Bus Grant program. The next grant application deadline is March 1, and priority is given to applicants in areas that do not meet federal air quality standards for fine particulates.
Motorist in bus-passing incident must wear ‘idiot’ sign

Shena Hardin is ordered by a judge to wear a sign that says, “Only an idiot drives on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus" at the intersection where she drove on a sidewalk to pass a stopped bus. She must also pay $250 in court costs, and her license has been suspended for 30 days.
Motorist pleads innocent in illegal bus-passing incident

Earlier this month, Shena Hardin was caught on video driving on a sidewalk to get around the bus, and she was ticketed by police. On Tuesday, she pleads not guilty to charges of not stopping for a school bus and reckless operation.
