Bullied bus monitor starts anti-bullying foundation

Karen Klein, who received an outpouring of support after a video of her being bullied by students on a bus went viral, launches the Karen Klein Anti-Bullying Foundation using $100,000 of the $703,873 that was raised on her behalf. The foundation is starting a music tour to raise money for anti-bullying counseling, among other initiatives.
Industry veteran completes NAPT special-needs program

Ted Finlayson-Schueler is the latest pupil transportation official to complete the association’s Special Needs Transportation Training Program. The program has a core curriculum that consists of six special-needs courses in a variety of settings, and it is supplemented by two courses of elective instruction from the NAPT Professional Development Series Program.

Marjorie Jones places tape over the mouth of a 7-year-old student who is unable to speak, but says at trial that she was "entertaining" the girl. She is sentenced to three years of probation and 100 hours of community service, and she is also facing a lawsuit from the girl's family.

Bus driver’s invention targets student crossing safety

The STEFFI Crossing Enhancer is designed to be worn on the back of a driver’s hand, and it comprises a gray reflective arrow on a bright yellow background with an orange border. Victoria DeCarlo, who developed the product, tells SBF that it can be worn on a bare hand or over a glove, and that its colors and arrow are highly visible through the windshield of a school bus, and from a distance.
Bus driver killed in collision with cement truck

Six others, including four children, are injured after the driver of the cement truck loses control of his vehicle and strikes the school bus. The crash reportedly melds the fronts of the vehicles.
District plans bus loop safety upgrade

As part of the project at Dansville (N.Y.) Central School District, a fence will be built at the edge of a parking lot facing the bus loop, and the loop will be off-limits to vehicular traffic during school hours.

The manufacturer's all-electric bus makes a stop at the Empire State Plaza in Albany on Thursday for a government VIP and media ride-along. Officials say the bus, which features an electric chassis from Smith Electric Vehicles, has a trip range of approximately 120 to 130 miles per charge and produces zero emissions.

New state director appointed in N.Y.

Mary Faherty Sansaricq succeeds Marion Edick, who recently retired from her post as director of pupil transportation services. Officials say Sansaricq has more than 20 years’ experience as an educator and administrator, during which time she served in the New York State Education Department’s Pupil Transportation Unit and Office of Educational Management Services, among other work.
Longtime N.Y. state director retires

Marion Edick stepped down from her post as the state’s director of pupil transportation services on Dec. 30. During Edick’s tenure, physical performance tests for school bus drivers were implemented and several programs were developed through the $400,000 training fund, including master instructor trainings and continuation of the PDS program.
Peter Lawrence completes Professional Development Series

Central School District is the first to finish all of the National Association for Pupil Transportation's PDS courses, which cover a wide range of pupil transportation topics.
