Marisa Weisinger of Innovative Transportation Solutions, Carol Stamper of Charlotte-Mecklenburg (N.C.) Schools and NASDPTS President Charlie Hood were among the honorees at Sunday's NAPT awards banquet. During Monday's Leading the Day: Recognition for Exceptional Performers celebratory breakfast, this year's America's Best school bus technician and inspector were among the individuals recognized for their achievements.

Winners named in ‘America’s Best’ technician, inspector competitions

Tim Knoll of Ohio placed first in the technician category and Shaun Dennis from Michigan took the top spot in the inspector category. Knoll and Dennis were among 30 school bus maintenance professionals who participated in the event; they were scored on a written exam and multiple hands-on components.
NAPT Summit to offer workshops on special-needs issues

Specific topics to be covered during the event in Portland, Ore., in October and November include the legal basis for special-needs transportation, communicating safety to students with disabilities and court decisions related to the rights of students with disabilities.
Dad who confronted bus bullies to speak at NAPT

NAPT Summit scholarship winners announced

Ten industry professionals receive a scholarship from Zonar Systems that will cover the cost of registration to this year's event in Portland, Ore. Two receive the Peter and Linda Lawrence Training Scholarship, which will also defray the registration cost.
Dirk Kempthorne takes on new responsibilities

The former U.S. secretary of the Interior and governor of Idaho who spoke at last year’s National Association for Pupil Transportation Summit has been appointed president and CEO of the American Council of Life Insurers. Kempthorne will lead the effort for insurers to maintain communication with national and state leaders.
Grant offered to fund student field trips

The program, launched last year by NAPT President Linda Bluth and her partner, will give preference this year to applications that benefit homeless students in Washington and Oregon, although the award will be discretionary.
Stimulus funds to help switch buses to CNG

With a grant provided through the EPA, a new program from NAPT will help school districts take older diesel buses and extend their life by converting them to run on compressed natural gas.

Special-needs event to offer NAPT endorsement courses

Attendees of the 2011 National Conference on Transporting Students With Disabilities and Preschoolers will be able to accumulate credits that count toward NAPT's new special-needs endorsement and its 32-hour course requirement for the NAPT Certificate of Special-Needs Transportation Training.

Peter Lawrence, director of transportation for Fairport (N.Y.) Central School District, and his wife, Linda, have endowed one scholarship for a school bus driver trainer to attend the NYAPT/CYR Foundation Conference and three scholarships for driver trainers to attend the 2010 NAPT Summit.
NAPT calls for Heroism Award nominations

For a person to be considered as a recipient, he or she must be a pupil transportation professional who performed a life-saving act, or the action must directly affect a pupil transportation program. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 1.
