Analysis finds buses speeding in school zones

Automated speed cameras are installed in school zones in Baltimore, and $40 tickets are issued to vehicles recorded driving at least 12 mph over the speed limit. The Baltimore Sun reports that county public school buses have triggered the cameras more than 100 times in the past two years, privately owned buses have received at least 800 citations and city-owned buses have accumulated more than 50.

Driver collapses behind the wheel, but stops bus

A student on the bus says the driver’s head “sunk over, like he got knocked out.” Despite being incapacitated, the driver is reportedly able to bring the bus to a stop and avoid slamming into a utility pole.

Man arrested for stalking girl at bus stop

The investigation by the Prince George’s County Police Department in Maryland reveals that Narciso Bonilla beeped his car horn and waved at the girl, and he also tried to speak with her. He is taken into custody after detectives set up a surveillance operation and witness him harassing her.

District investigates student handcuffing incident

Police handcuff the autistic student after responding to a call from his bus driver and aide, who report that they and two students were bitten after the boy became aggressive and escaped his seat harness. The boy’s mother says the situation should have been handled differently.

Authorities take the boy into custody and say that pending review of the state’s attorney, he will be charged as a juvenile. Baltimore County Police Chief James Johnson is calling on gun owners to follow the law by securing their weapons from children 15 years old and younger — the boy’s grandfather is the owner of the handgun involved in the incident.

Survey reports on illegal bus passing incidents in Maryland

The survey, which the State Department of Education coordinated with transportation directors from all 24 of Maryland’s school systems, reveals that 7,028 violations were recorded on a single day last month. Large school systems noted the most violators, while some small school systems found no violators.
