Kansas Highway Patrol conducting school bus inspections

Troopers will check buses statewide from the middle of July until the beginning of the school session to make sure the vehicles comply with safety regulations. Some of the items troopers will check are the lights, emergency exits, tires, windshield wipers, fire extinguishers, first aid kits and emergency spill kits.
Kansas district extends contract with First Student

Bus swept off road, falls into rushing water

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the events surrounding the accident, but a sheriff says that roads in the area were still covered with water from a recent rain, and the bus had driven into a submerged stretch of road. After falling into two and a half feet of water, the 10 students on board use the escape hatch and windows to climb to safety on top of the bus until first responders arrive.

Bus crash first responders honored for rescue efforts

The city of Bonner Springs in Kansas declares Monday “First Responders Day” to recognize the more than 60 men and women who came to the aid of those involved in the crash last week. The individuals, who ranged from police officers to paramedics to civilians, rescued everyone on the bus.
22 students injured when school bus tips over

Officials for the Kansas Highway Patrol say that the bus was on a ramp when the tires on the passenger side left the road, and then the rear of the bus slid down an embankment and the bus turned onto its side. The students, who were not wearing safety restraints, sustain injuries described as “noncritical.”
First Student donates $5,000 to support educational program

The school bus contractor allocates the money to sponsor Wichita (Kan.) Public Schools’ golf tournament, which supports the school system’s Educational Edge Program. The program is a nonprofit that raises funds for athletics, fine arts, and project grants for classrooms and teachers within the district.

Fort Leavenworth School District, USD #207, faced numerous challenges in transporting students and keeping track of them due to a high student turnover rate, routing changes and budgetary constraints. Officials say that in the two years since EDULOG’s student tracking and routing solutions have been installed, they’ve “never lost a student,” and making changes to routes is “easy.”
Arrests made in fatal crash involving school buses

Two men transporting buses to Mexico are taken into custody on Wednesday and face various charges, including involuntary manslaughter. According to the Kansas State Patrol, a school bus being towed by another bus got a flat tire, so the driver detached the buses and they sat in the roadway, leading to an accident that killed a motorist.
New state director named in Kansas

Marilee Mayes retired from the position at the school bus contractor’s Hutchinson, Kan., terminal on Friday after 27 years on the job. Mayes oversaw the student transportation for Hutchinson Unified School District 308, and she now serves the school system as a substitute school bus driver.

He tells SBF that health issues were a key factor in his decision, but he also was frustrated by some developments that he said he feels aren't in the best interests of the state's school bus riders.
