Under the five-year agreement, the contractor will provide school bus service for the St. James Parish School Board beginning in April. The company will also provide all routing, maintenance and management services, and hire drivers for routes currently without a district driver.

District's revamped transportation plan will provide efficient service

Under the plan, which Seattle Public Schools’ transportation manager discusses with SBF, transportation zones will streamline bus routes for attendance-area elementary and K-8 schools. Ride times will decrease to 25 minutes or less, and about 80 buses will be taken off the road.

The business manager for a Massachusetts school district proposes using district-owned buses for student transportation, saying it would save $62,000 this year, but the district's school committee rejects the proposal. The committee’s vice chairperson says he could not see long-term savings with the plan, and the longevity of the buses was an issue for him.

Missouri school district acquires lot for new district-operated fleet

The district's board of education purchases the lot, which includes an office and maintenance facility, from its contractor. School officials believe that having a district-operated fleet will save money in anticipation of major budget cuts; the district also switches to a three-tier bus system to further cut costs.
First Student acquires Star Shuttle Co.

The contractor began operating the school and charter transportation service provider’s approximately 70 buses under the Star Shuttle name on Oct. 30. Star Shuttle contracts have been transferred to First Student, and all 140 employees who passed stringent background checks were offered employment with the company.

FirstGroup plc chief executive to retire

Sir Moir Lockhead, who has been with the company for 21 years, will hand over executive responsibilities on Nov. 1 and retire on March 31, 2011. He will assist the company and his successor, Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Executive Tim O'Toole, in the transition.
