Bus driver praised for actions during shooting

Police say the driver told the students on his bus to get down out of the line of fire, he was able to leave the scene of the incident and he then called dispatchers to notify police. Although one bullet reportedly hit the bus, no one was injured.

The contractor is being sued by Ken Webber, who was fired for refusing to take a Confederate flag with the word "redneck" on it off of his pickup truck, which was parked in a lot owned by a school district that the contractor serves. The company says that Webber considered the flag to be an expression of his identity and lifestyle, and that therefore, his flag is not constitutionally protected speech because its message is not a matter of public concern.

With school buses hitting the road, officials from school districts, bus companies and law enforcement agencies are implementing traffic safety initiatives, and issuing tips for students, motorists and parents. In North Carolina, for example, Rockingham County Schools has installed nine cameras that will rotate among its buses to help catch motorists who illegally pass stopped school buses.

Under the plan, which Seattle Public Schools’ transportation manager discusses with SBF, transportation zones will streamline bus routes for attendance-area elementary and K-8 schools. Ride times will decrease to 25 minutes or less, and about 80 buses will be taken off the road.

The business manager for a Massachusetts school district proposes using district-owned buses for student transportation, saying it would save $62,000 this year, but the district's school committee rejects the proposal. The committee’s vice chairperson says he could not see long-term savings with the plan, and the longevity of the buses was an issue for him.
