10 dead in motorcoach-FedEx truck crash
April 11, 2014
The bus is traveling on a freeway and carrying high school students on their way to California’s Humboldt State University for a tour when the FedEx semi-truck crosses the freeway’s median and collides with the bus. The drivers of both vehicles, three chaperones and five students are killed. The California Highway Patrol and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the accident.
U.S. DOT unveils distracted driving campaign

The effort is the Department of Transportation's first-ever national advertising campaign and law enforcement crackdown to combat distracted driving. Ads using the phrase “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” will run from April 7 to 15, which coincides with a nationwide law enforcement crackdown in states with distracted driving bans.
California district pilots electric drive system on bus

Escondido Union High School District is testing the ElecTruck Drive System from TransPower for one month. The system has been retrofitted on a Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner HDX unit, and Director of Transportation Robert Berkstresser says data being tracked during the pilot period include the battery stability, motor efficiency and the reserve percentage of energy after a route.

Trans Tech all-electric bus in service at California district

The SSTe is the first of four electric buses in service at Kings Canyon Unified School District (KCUSD), and officials say the bus is expected to save over $10,000 a year in fuel and maintenance costs. Transportation Director Jason Flores says that going electric “is just one more important step in KCUSD's ongoing portfolio of measures to protect our children, serve our community and be good stewards of our environment.”
Boy honored for efforts to improve safety at bus stop

Ten-year-old Sterling Vieau conducts a survey to tally how many vehicles did and did not stop at the intersection where his school bus stop is located, and he finds that 67% of the vehicles did not stop, despite posted signs. The San Bernardino County (Calif.) Sheriff's Department presents him with a certificate, and deputies also issue citations to motorists at the intersection.
Mutual respect strengthens driver-technician relations

School district to bring back busing as pilot program

After a 9-year-old girl was fatally struck by a pickup truck while walking home in December, parents petitioned the Etiwanda (Calif.) School District to bring back school bus service. The school board decides to implement a pilot transportation program for students who live at least 3 miles from school.
Dog bites girl in face at school bus stop

The girl was with her mother as they waited for a school bus to arrive at their stop in Desert Hot Springs, Calif. The dog, an intact husky mix that is about 2 years old, bit the girl in the face at least once, possibly twice.
Driver honored for saving toddler’s life

Beaumont (Calif.) Unified School District driver Jody Jermeay sees a toddler running down the sidewalk toward a car that is backing out of a driveway and pulls her bus across the driveway to block the car from pulling out. The child’s older sibling is able to move the boy out of the way just in time.
STI closes acquisition of Atlantic Express’ California operations

Officials for Student Transportation Inc. say that the entire process and customer response has gone so well that they were able to move up the closing of the transaction. Student Transportation’s subsidiary SchoolWheels Direct has been managing the operations of the fleet for the past month.
Trans Tech all-electric bus passes certification in California

The SSTe is now legal to operate in the state after passing the California Highway Patrol’s certification, and the first bus is scheduled to go to Kings Canyon Unified School District in Reedley, Calif. Officials for Trans Tech Bus say the SSTe is scheduled to start full production later this year.
STI subsidiary takes over Atlantic Express’ California operations

Student Transportation Inc. (STI)’s SchoolWheels Direct will manage the California school transportation business of Atlantic Express until an asset purchase agreement is closed. Under the court-approved asset purchase agreement, Student Transportation of America (another STI subsidiary) may purchase Atlantic Express’ California assets, contingent on receiving various school district consents and final negotiations.
Parents ask for bus service to resume after fatal accident

Parents with children who attend two schools located near the site of a recent accident have started two online petitions to urge California's Etiwanda School District to resume bus service. Bus service for regular-education students was discontinued in the 2010-11 school year due to budget issues.

California driver training specialist Leann Kenley to retire

Kenley is set to step down from her position at the California Department of Education's Office of School Transportation on Sept. 30. State pupil transportation director Anna Borges tells SBF that Kenley has made significant contributions to the California pupil transportation community, particularly in the area of special needs.
Safety competition champ Antonio Perez joins California DOE

The men approach the bus and say something had been thrown out the window, and Nunez gets suspicious when they give conflicting answers when she asks if their car was damaged.
Man arrested in theft of 500 gallons of school bus fuel

In Ripon, Calif., police catch a man allegedly in the act of stealing more than $2,000 worth of fuel from a storage tank used by school buses. The suspect reportedly had a trailer with hoses and pumping equipment for fast siphoning.
