Hi Folks its been awhile since i've been on here
I have a 96 466 eng that has a gravel in a tin can noise when under load and acelerating at cruising speed you don't here it.
I took the belt off while out on the road and it still did it.
It almost sounded like a spun main bearing. Did these engines Have any bearing issues or piston issues. I did pull an oil sample and sent it in. Should be back tommorow. Hoping theres some 466 experts out there. The oil pressure is up 40 to 60 so that seems norm
Anybody has any ideas that would be great.

If it's an automatic tranny, I second the flex plate or a seized stator.

If not, look for a leak between the turbo and the intake manifold. They can make some really strange noises.

I had a driver complaining that her bus was making farting noises. A split hose between the CAC and the tube leading to the intake manifold was the culprit. Another thought her transmission was shot. The elbow on top of the intake manifold was split, making some really raunchy noises under a load.

If it doesn't fit, FORCE it.
If it breaks, well, it needed replacing anyway.

Well guys I finally got to work on this bus Sure glad we had alot of buses cause this one has been down since early oct.
I took the trans out did not find a cracked flex plate I'm asumming they crack right any normal place they crack?
If the Stator in the converter were frozen wouldn't I get a driveablity problem of some kind? I really hoped to find a problem with the flex plate
THANKS ROB

I kinda doubt it, but check that the turbo hasn't lost it's bearings. Had an 8.3 Cummins do it once...sounded like the rocks in a can...but also had power loss.

Just a thought.

did you remove the flex plate? the cracks are typically behind the scuff plate.

its like a slinky! useless but fun to watch.
