I have had an itermitent problem with the starter button not working at times. Occasionally it does nothing and when you try it later in the day the engine spins and starts the first time. For the last week, the starter would not spin over. Today, with the key on, the mechanic checks the wiring and the starter begins to spin and the engine starts, no one is pushing the start button though. The starter contines to run with the engine. The mechanic turns off the ignition and removes the key. The engine stopped but the starter kept running. He had to disconnect the batteries to get it to stop. He says we need a new starter.
He installs a new starter and when he connects the battery, the starter begins to spin over with the ignition switch off. Same as it was doing before. Any ideas??? |

Well is the solinoid mounted on the stater? Either the solinoid is bad [shorted out] or the ignition switch is shorted. If its not either of those then you got some wires crossed someware.
The mechanic should have known that its not the starter it self. |

Most likely the starter relay is bad. It is not part of the starter itself but sends power from the batteries to the starter solenoid when the "Start" button is pushed (or key turned to "start").
It is also possible, that the "Overcrank Protection" relay is bad, if equipped. |

We know that the solenoid is not bad as the new starter is doing the same and staying engaged as the old one. We can't locate any short so far. It seems to sound like a relay problem. Agreed.
We know the "Overcrank Protection" relay is behind the dashboard on the passenger side and that one is a yellow relay but we cannot find a starter relay anywhere on this thing. It is a 1997 4700 chasis with 466DTE, any idea where it may be lacated. We don't have a schematic on this vehicle. |

Ive had starters run on when the ground wire on the vandal lock dead bolt switch's were loose. They were on 97 Carpenters, but probably work on the same principal as the Vistas. |

I'm with ModMech. There's a problem with the starter relay. Depending on how old the unit is, it may be mounted directly on the firewall or it may be in a cluster of relays mounted on a bracket centered over the engine.
Diagnostics from a distance is never easy. this is where I'd start. |
If it doesn't fit, FORCE it. If it breaks, well, it needed replacing anyway. Pullin' wrenches for 45 years. |
