POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — A 6-year-old boy with special needs here was dropped off at the wrong bus stop and left alone last week, WSAZ reports.

The boy’s mother, Alison Allen, told the news source that her son, who is developmentally delayed and suffers seizures, was picked up by his school bus at his school but missed his stop a few blocks away at his daycare center. The daycare assistant director told WSAZ she called the bus garage immediately, and Allen added that the director of transportation for the county told her the bus driver determined the boy had gotten off at a later stop.

Allen said a school official told her a bus driver found her son in the area, picked him up, and he was returned to the daycare, though it's unclear whether it was the original bus driver or a different one who found him, WSAZ reports. Allen added that her son had been wandering alone for about five minutes and didn’t have his emergency medication with him.

Larry Wright, director of transportation for Mason County Schools, told the news source they are looking into the incident and that the policy is for daycare facilities to do a head count before the bus leaves, but the daycare said the bus left before they had time to realize the boy hadn't gotten off the bus. Allen added she was told the bus driver was a substitute, and school officials have been very caring and are trying to get answers.
