Parents play a key role in ensuring that their special-needs child's transportation needs are met safely and appropriately, Linda Bluth writes in a new blog post for the National PTA (Parent Teacher Association).

Bluth, special initiatives program specialist for the Maryland State Department of Education and past president of the National Association for Pupil Transportation, explains in the blog post how parents should use the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process to address transportation if individualized services are needed.

IEP team members, including the parents, must give input on how the child's disability impacts school bus safety, Bluth writes. She also informs parents on the danger zone around the school bus.
