Ga. team takes top honors at special-needs roadeo

ORLANDO, Fla. — School bus drivers and attendants tested their skills here on Saturday for the 15th National Special Needs Team Safety Roadeo.

Bus driver Kenny Moss and attendant Laura Lietch of Fulton County Schools in Fairburn, Ga., placed first in the competition, scoring 885 points out of a possible 1,002 points.

Second place went to driver Randall Price and attendant Nicole Dolce of First Student Inc. in Syracuse, N.Y. The team scored 852 points.

Taking third was a pair from Cherokee School District in Canton, Ga. Driver Dale Roberts and attendant Rhonda Fiddler earned 812 points.

In the roadeo, participants are judged in driving and backing a bus; loading, unloading and securing students in wheelchairs; and evacuating a special-needs bus.

During the skills events, teams are also required to maintain behavioral control of special-needs students on the bus.

The roadeo was held in conjunction with the 21st National Conference on Transporting Students with Disabilities & Preschoolers, which runs through this Wednesday.
