STOCKTON, Calif. — A former Lodi Unified School District bus driver received a 25-year, four-month sentence for molesting a then 8-year-old special-needs student on his bus.

Richard Evans pled guilty in June to picking up the girl first on his route and pulling the bus over in a residential neighborhood to molest her, The Record reports. Evans was arrested on Nov. 4 after the girl told family members what happened.

Evans — whose crime was also captured on surveillance tape — will receive credit for 303 days served and will be eligible for parole after serving 85 percent of his sentence.

I believe all drivers need to be advised that surveillance tapes will be constantly reviewed. I believe that extensive background checks and constant monitoring of driver behavior could prevent some of the corrupt behavior of bus drivers.
