SBSC unveils new training module for special-needs transportation

CLEVELAND — The School Bus Safety Company (SBSC) has developed a new curriculum for training school bus drivers who transport students with special needs.
Transporting Students with Special Needs covers all aspects of the job, using professionally-developed, blended-learning techniques for adults, according to the company.
The course includes seven DVDs, a trainer's guide, a driver's study and reference guide and a laminated job aid, summarizing the most important issues a driver needs to know.
The training includes an overview of pertinent legislation and addressessecurement, transportation challenges, emergency evacuations, types of special needs, balancing needs and lifts and mobility devices.
The DVDs include comments made by students with special needs and their parents, who explain what they look for from the drivers transporting their children.
This is SBSC's second module and follows the company's Driver Training Course, now in place at more than 500 school districts. The cost of the Special Needs Course is $1,795. For more information, visit http://schoolbussafetyco.com/.
