District considering EpiPen training for bus drivers

SHARING TOOLS   | Email Print RSS

SANDWICH, Mass. — Administrators from Sandwich Public Schools (SPS) plan to meet with officials from the district’s contractor, First Student Inc., to discuss EpiPen training for school bus drivers.

First Student told the Cape Cod Times that training on the shot, which is for students with severe allergies, is handled on a contract-by-contract basis.

First Student’s current contract with SPS does not require EpiPen instruction for drivers, but Superintendent Mary Ellen Johnson told the Cape Cod Times, "We're going to have a conversation around it to see if we can provide training."

Some other Cape Cod school districts do require the training in their contracts with First Student.

Massachusetts law as of March requires new school bus drivers to be trained in EpiPen use to get their annual certification renewed, but the law does not cover drivers licensed before March.

Does anyone know if Illinois is going to implement this soon, I have heard it is some bill, but I don't know where they are with the implementation of it. Please advise.

I am a school bus driver in North Carolina and I also have several allergies. I have carried an EpiPen most of my life. I have found that it is difficult to get people to understand that allergies are more than just watery eyes, itchy rashes and sneezing. Schools train drivers to handle students who have special needs and those who are diabetic, but no one really understands that a severe allergic reaction can be deadly. I applaud this school system and I hope that more states will look into following their lead.
