School bus video surveillance footage obtained by ABC15 shows an unsettling ordeal for a 4-year-old boy with special needs who was left behind. In the video, the boy appears to wake up, gets up from his seat and looks around. The youngster, holding his backpack, looks scared and unsure of what to do.
Special-needs student stops breathing on bus, dies

Police say the student appears to have passed away from complications from cerebral palsy. Two bus aides noticed a problem when they were trying to unload the boy from the bus. The bus driver called 911, and a police officer attempted to perform CPR on the boy until emergency medical personnel arrived.
Minnesota special-needs pupil transporters honored

Special-education school bus drivers and special-education transportation assistants are recognized for service excellence by the Minnesota Special Education Transportation Committee, in cooperation with the Minnesota Association for Pupil Transportation. First place winners in each category will have an opportunity to receive free training at the Minnesota School Bus Train the Trainer Instructor seminars in July.

Footage from the September incident released last month shows Stephanie Wilkerson thrusting her left foot forward, and it makes contact with an autistic child on the bus’ stairs, who then falls. Wilkerson was fired from her position at a Florida district following the incident, and she faces a charge of aggravated child abuse.

The program has a core curriculum that consists of six special-needs courses, and it is supplemented by two courses of elective instruction from the NAPT Professional Development Series Program.

Student tracking app aims to increase reimbursements

With the Patron Attendance and Tracking Solution, created by Kevin McGuire of Michigan City (Ind.) Area Schools, bus personnel select students' photos on a tablet as they board or exit the bus. After fully implementing the app on its special-needs buses, the district expects a 20% increase in Medicaid reimbursements.

The securement systems suppliers' sales team is now organized into four core segments: transit, school bus, paratransit and personal mobility, which officials say was done to better serve customer needs. Coinciding with this announcement is news that Trisha Nolen has joined the team as southern regional sales manager as part of the school bus/paratransit market segment.
Ralph Braun: a pioneer in mobility

Braun, who was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy at 6 years old, went on to develop innovative mobility products, including a motorized scooter and a vehicle wheelchair lift. The founder and CEO of The Braun Corp., who passed away on Feb. 8 at age 72, is also remembered for his contributions to safe pupil transportation.
Transportation consortiums cut costs and boost training

Genesee Intermediate School District’s transportation consortiums provide service to special-needs and career/technical students in 21 districts. Route, bus maintenance and other efficiencies have saved participating districts $42.4 million since 1997, while service continues to expand. Driver training is extensive.

By establishing policies on which students can receive special-needs bus transportation and providing those students with the exact services they need, transportation departments can operate buses efficiently, creating cost savings for districts. Communication and teamwork between school and transportation personnel are essential to achieving this.

Documents show bus girl jumped from had wrong number of aides

Onyx Williams suffered serious head trauma after she jumped from the back of her moving special-needs bus, and she later died. A copy of the contract between her school district and the bus company that was providing its special-needs transportation indicated that two aides were to be assigned to Williams’ route, but only one was on board at the time of the incident.

Authorities in Rutherford, N.J., say that the 16-year-old special-needs student opened an emergency hatch at the back of the bus, and they believe she either fell or jumped. Three other students, the driver and an aide were on the bus.
