LEWIS COUNTY, Mo. — WGEM reports that a misdemeanor traffic citation was issued for John Logan, a Lewis County C-1 School District bus driver, who was involved in a crash that sent several children to the hospital, according to court records. Logan is charged with improper lane usage resulting in an accident on April 1.

According to the final report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash reconstruction team, the news outlet reports, a student walked to the front of the bus and said she was going to vomit. As Logan bent over to slide a trash can to the student, the front right tire dropped off the roadway. He tried to correct the bus but over-steered, causing the bus to slide off the road, down an embankment and roll on its top. The student who was sick was ejected from the bus. Twenty-nine students were on the bus when the crash occurred and had injuries ranging from minor to severe.

The report, according to WGEM, says there was no indication Logan was speeding and rules pertaining to distracting the bus driver were posted appropriately. An inspection of the bus did not find any mechanical problems with the steering or brakes. However, the report concluded that Logan was at fault, the news outlet reports, stating that the driver is not absolved of the responsibility for staying focused on driving the bus, even if the child may have broken the rules and distracted the driver.
