LAFAYETTE, La. — Officials said that Daniel Gary, a bus driver for a local school district, was placed on administrative leave after receiving a citation for driving around lowered railroad crossing guards, The Advocate reports.

Gary allegedly drove across the tracks in front of an oncoming train with at least 30 elementary schoolchildren on the bus. The train was traveling at 35 mph and was about 200 feet from the intersection when Gary crossed the tracks, officials said.

School district staff will investigate the incident while Gary is on leave.
